Dune Sea Sail Barge

A Thames sailing barge of the type once common around the Thames estuary and England's East Coast. Being flat bottomed with a shallow draft of only two and a half feet they could sail into the creeks and inlets around the Thames estuary to carry goods. The collapsible main mast allowed them to sail under bridges.They were also very stable and possessed cargo space above and below deck.

An old Oxford college barge under the trees in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid-1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

The River Thames sailing barge is a type of commercial sailing boat once common on the River Thames in London. The flat-bottomed barges with a shallow draught and leeboards, were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary, with its shallow waters and narrow tributary rivers. A sailing barge heading into Portsmouth Harbour. The image was captured from the Southsea end of Portsmouth, looking out on to Spithead. In the background are the hills of the Isle of Wight with yachts and a car ferry. These barges are more commonly seen in the Thames estuary and East Anglia area where they were once the local freight carriers.

This 31.5 mile contour canal travels from The Falkirk Wheel to Edinburgh. Popular features of this gentle lock-free waterway include the Avon, Almond and Slateford Aqueducts, which are among the finest in Britain. Best viewed LARGER.

This thrifted gem came to us from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and appears to be a crew shirt from an underwater pipeline operation, specifically on Barge 207. A little research revealed that Barge 207 was designed and built in 1958 as one of the first dedicated lay barge underwater pipeline platforms, and is apparently still owned and operated by the Brown & Root company. So whether you’re in the underwater pipeline field or just want to impress women by telling them that you are, Barge 207 is the one for you!
