Description: "Close-up of a Chachalaca" I was walking the trails at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas, when this Plain Chachalaca landed right beside me. So close that I couldn't get it completely, so I settled for a profile portrait. As for getting photos of butterflies that day, well, I wasn't as fortunate. Photographed at the National Butterfly Center, a private nature preserve operated by the North American Butterfly Association that serves as an outdoor butterfly conservatory. It is located adjacent to Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, near the city of Mission, Texas. Description: "The Ever-Singing Dickcissel" I captured this stunning moment from my car window on June 3rd while exploring a quiet, rural dirt road. Perched high on a delicate branch against the soft morning sky, this beautiful male Dickcissel (Spiza americana) was completely lost in his melody, pouring his heart out into the open prairie air. You can practically hear his buzzing, rhythmic call through the crisp details of his vibrant yellow chest, black throat bib, and rich chestnut shoulders. The best place to find Dickcissels is in overgrown pastures, savannahs, and croplands in the central Great Plains. I photographed this one while out birdwatching on the back roads in Northern Oklahoma, near home. Copyright Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 202
Description: "Hotel Donaldson Fargo ND" I knew nothing about this hotel when I photographed this sign; it just caught my eye. What I learned later: Originally built in 1893 by the Odd Fellows Lodge after a fire destroyed much of downtown Fargo. In the mid-1900s, it became a hotel and went through many owners over time. Around 2000, the hotel, which was in great disrepair, was bought once again by another owner; renovations began to bring it back to life, and it was reborn as a modern luxury boutique. I transformed my original photograph with a subtle painterly effect, creating photo art while preserving the scene I experienced. Description: "Sparrow Bathing In A Puddle" It was Springtime in Texas, and rather hot and humid after a rain shower. The birds didn't mind, though; they actually enjoyed the fresh water. Some were drinking, some were splashing, and some simply enjoyed cooling their feet! Lincoln Sparrow photographed in the Bentsen Rio Grande State Park in South Texas. Description: "Historic Facade of Saint Boniface Cathedral Winnipeg" During a summer visit to Winnipeg, I stopped to photograph the striking facade of Saint Boniface Cathedral. The preserved stone front, all that remained after a 1968 fire, now stands before the modern cathedral built behind it, creating a remarkable blend of history, resilience, and architectural beauty. A dramatic summer sky adds to the timeless character of this iconic landmark. It is a shy species of woodlands and brush in Mexico and South Texas, so I felt privileged when it emerged from the woods in the background. Description: "Hooded Oriole Santa Ana NWR Texas" I was out looking for a male Hooded Oriole, hoping to find the bright orange adult since they’re starting to show up in South Texas. Description: “Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth Minnesota” Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks—only Lake Superior tops it, according to the visitors center. Standing 138 feet and stretching 390 feet, the steel span crosses the Duluth Ship Canal, linking Park Point’s sandbar to the city. Its lifting system raises the deck to 135 feet to let massive ships pass. It was impressive to watch it lift to various heights depending on the size of each vessel. Here, the Vista Star tour boat passes under the bridge. Copyright Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20250810-DSC_3145

Description: "Shy White-tipped Dove" The White‑tipped Dove has the largest range in the Americas of any dove, spanning from Texas to Argentina. Shy and unobtrusive, it forages on the forest floor among leaf litter; in the U.S., it’s limited to South Texas. Though it looks to be resting, it was gently preening its feathers. Description: Mambo's Restaurant and Rooftop Bar Bourbon Street by Debra Martz I enjoyed an early morning walk on Bourbon Street and other French Quarter Streets nearby while there were no crowds. While on this stroll, I took pictures of my favorite signs and several are places I actually went to later. AND, Mambo's served up some great gumbo and char-grilled oysters! YUM! Description: Domino Sugar Refinery On the Mississippi River Louisiana by Debra Martz When seeing at a distance and even when nearing the refinery, I thought it was something of the past. And then the narrator aboard the Creole Queen Historic Cruise began to tell of its history. To my surprise it is still operational and has been operating on the banks of the Mississippi River since 1909, now producing 7 million pounds of sugar per day. This Louisiana refinery is one of the region’s largest employers, providing more than 400 direct jobs. Today, the Chalmette refinery is the largest cane sugar refinery in the western hemisphere. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved

Description: Ford Mustang Rally Deadwood SD by Debra Martz We just happened across this car rally in Deadwood, South Dakota on August 29, 2014. I felt very fortunate to get this photo as it was early evening and just after we arrived the owners started getting in their cars and leaving! I'm not certain but believe this was in connection with the Sturgis Mustang Rally going on Aug 27-31, 2014 (so a search on google informed me!) We did see a large number of Mustangs all around the NW area of South Dakota while we were there. IMPORTANT: The FAA watermark does NOT appear on printed images; it is for online security only. It continues through several other buildings very well organized with historical information of Cimarron County. There is, also, a museum devoted to the brewery which is free and open to the public.
