Description: Burger Chef was an American fast-food restaurant chain. It began operating in 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana, expanded throughout the United States, and at its peak in 1973, the chain had 1,050 locations, including some in Canada. The chain featured several signature items, such as the Big Shef and Super Shef hamburgers.
Description: Pic 'N' Save Corporation (later MacFrugals) was at one time the second-largest closeout retail chain in the United States. William Zimmerman founded Pic 'N' Save Corporation in 1950 in Culver City, California. By 1985, it operated 90 stores in California and six other U.S. states. In 1991, the company changed its name to MacFrugals. It later expanded to the Southwest and into the South, but left both markets in the late '90s. In 1997, Consolidated Stores Corporation bought out the remaining MacFrugals stores for $995 million in stock and slowly began converting them to their closeout retail store brand.
Description: Caldor was a discount department store chain founded in 1951 by husband and wife Carl and Dorothy Bennett, hence the name, Cal-Dor. Referred to by many as an upscale discounter, Caldor grew from a second story “Walk-Up-&-Save” operation in Port Chester, New York, into a regional retailing giant. Its stores were earning over $1 billion in sales by the time Mr. Bennett retired in 1985, by which time Caldor was a subsidiary of Associated Dry Goods. Despite its successes, Caldor suffered from financial issues by the ’90s, and the company was liquidated, with all 145 stores closing by May 1999.
Description: S. H. Kress & Co. was a chain of "five and dime" stores, established by Samuel Henry Kress, which operated from 1896 to 1981. In the first half of the 20th century, there were Kress stores with ornamented architecture on "Main Street" in hundreds of cities and towns. The Kress chain was known for the architecture of its buildings.[5] "Samuel H. Kress... envisioned his stores as works of public art that would contribute to the cityscape."[6] A number of former Kress stores are recognized as architectural landmarks and many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the 1913 building on Canal Street in New Orleans (now the New Orleans Ritz-Carlton) and the 1929 neoclassical store in Asheville, North Carolina.

In 1954 the company's first store was established in a strip mall in Plainfield, Indiana. In the early 1960s, the company felt that the future of retailing would be in covered shopping centers (otherwise known as malls). The first Paul Harris Store located in a mall was in Akron, Ohio. Paul Harris Stores went bankrupt in 2000.
Description: One-derful Records was an independent R&B and soul label based in Chicago. Founded by George Leaner (June 1, 1917 – September 18, 1983) in 1962, One-derful was one of the few black-owned labels in Chicago until its demise in 1968. The label is most known for the release of "Shake a Tail Feather" by the Five Du-Tones in 1963. Other artist on the label included the Sharpees, McKinley Mitchell, Alvin Cash, and Harold Burrage. A few subsidiary labels were launched: Mar-V-Lus, M-Pac, Halo, and Midas Records.
