That all said, the ruins are captivating. I understand that Henry VIII's forces removed the roof to the let the elements take their toll on the interior. The walls are essentially intact, so the grace of the place is still so evident. the wide nave, the aisles, the tower, the now vacant windows. It must have been so glorious.

The Ruins of Fountains Abbey Socks
Main Tag:

Description: This is an image of just a small portion of the ruins of Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, England. The abbey, judging by what remains, must have been a remarkable structure. Its Norman heritage is evident in the round arches, and the now empty openings would presumably housed splendid windows. All gone now as the abbey was a victim, in 1539, of the 'Dissolution of the Abbeys' a decree by Henry VIII, which left it without a roof so that the weather could take its toll. That ruination was compounded by a further pillaging of the stones, with the nearby Fountains Hall apparently being a beneficiary. Today, the ruins are in the care of the National Trust and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Wonderful Cellarium, Fountains Abbey Socks
Main Tag:

Description: This is an image of the 'Cellarium' at Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, England. As I understand it, this large space was used to store the harvest yield. While much of Fountains Abbey was destroyed during the King Henry VIII-ordered dissolution of the monasteries, this extraordinary structure survived. What I love about this image is the light from the open windows and how it illuminates the truly amazing vaulted ceiling. Considering that this place was essentially a barn, it was built with such lasting care.

The Ruined Nave of Fountains Abbey Socks
Main Tag:

Description: This is an image of the remains of the nave at Fountains Abbey, which is in North Yorkshire, England. The abbey was founded in the mid-12th century, but fell foul of Henry VIII's "Dissolution of the Monasteries" decree in 1539, which sought to seize the wealth of the religious houses. That's history, but what now remains is a remarkable testament to the people who built the abbey. Apparently, the dissolution robbed the abbey of its roof, leaving the elements to destroy the interior. However, the walls remain largely intact where the columns, arches, and window spaces clearly outline what must have been a spectacular, but solemn, place. What I love about the image is the combination of symmetry, and perspective., and green, blue and orange.
