Description: Woolworth's, officially known as F. W. Woolworth Company, was one of the first five-and-dime retail chains in the U.S., founded by Frank W. Woolworth in 1879 in Utica, New York. It pioneered the concept of fixed prices (no haggling) and self-service displays. The chain rapidly expanded, becoming a retail giant through the 20th century with stores across the U.S. and globally. Woolworth’s was known for its lunch counters, which became sites of historic civil rights protests in the 1960s. However, by the late 20th century, Woolworth’s struggled to compete with big-box retailers like Walmart. It closed its U.S. stores in 1997, but its legacy lives on—its sporting goods division evolved into Foot Locker, which still operates today.

The first Woolco was located in Columbus, Ohio, and by 1966, there were 18 in the US, and nine in Canada with plans for 30 stores to be added per year.
