Getting into the Christmas spirit with this watercolour painting. I always enjoy painting birds because they allow for a lot of texture and brush experimentation, this one focusing on colour bleeding and a paint puddle kind of technique. The words 'peacock' and 'alien abduction' were not words we ever expected to put together but then we created this piece. the peacock was just supposed to be lit so you could see its beautiful tail feathers but now the piece is finished we think it has a distinct 'about to be abducted by aliens' vibe!

A dark, overcast day lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee (a West Coast "specialty"), who was perched on one of the fruit trees in the backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations. In the summertime, there may be as many as six of these chubby and inquisitive songbirds. Their song is sweeter and sounds almost like trickling water -- compared to the "disapproving" calls of the more numerous and flightier Black-Capped Chickadees.

A red kite searching for food on thermals over the farm fields of Northamptonshire on a Spring day. Although the red kite is a bird of prey, red kites usually feed on carrion but will occasionally take small birds and earth worms as food. The red kite was extinct in England for many years but has now been successfully reintroduced and the call of the red kite can now be heard in many places around the UK.

This print was a result of us comparing the beauty of peacock feathers and the striking way they burst out, to the explosive beautify of a firework display.
