Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Ashanti started performing and writing songs as a child. She set a triple jump record at her high school and was offered an athletic scholarship, but chose to pursue music instead. Record producer Irv Gotti discovered Ashanti as a teenager and signed her to Murder Inc. Records in 2002.
