The Basil Rathbone The Hound Of The Baskervilles design is inspired by Sidney Lanfield's 1939 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic The Hound Of The Baskervilles starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson investigate the legend of a supernatural hound, a beast that may be stalking a young heir on the fog-shrouded moorland that makes up his estate.

In a radio interview Rathbone recalled that Twentieth Century-Fox producer and director Gene Markey, lunching with producer-director-actor Gregory Ratoff and 20th Century-Fox mogul Daryl Zanuck at Lucey's Restaurant in Hollywood, proposed a film version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. When asked who could possibly play Holmes, Markey incredulously replied, "Who?! Basil Rathbone!" An English actor widely considered to be the definitive Holmes of his era. Basil Rathbone’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is so empowering and inspirational for both children and adults on film. The Sherlock Holmes And The Spider Woman Design is inspired by the 1943 mystery film starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. Arthur Conan Doyle created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 when he published a Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Sidney Edward Paget (4 October 1860 – 28 January 1908) was a British illustrator of the Victorian era, best known for his illustrations that accompanied Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in The Strand Magazine. When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle revived the Sherlock Holmes series with The Hound of the Baskervilles, serializedVictorian era in The Strand in 1901–02, he specifically requested that Paget be the illustrator.

He observes countless details about the scene and the victim. Many of which the police seem to have overlooked and then from that information arrives at a conclusion that is not necessarily true, but is probable based on the information available. So why is he known as a master of deduction? Deductive reasoning is also known as ‘top-down’ logic, where the reasoner begins with an accepted premise and seeks to prove another statement based on previously “known” information.

The sleuth of Baker Street is timeless. It has been over 100 years since the first story featuring Holmes was published in 1887's A Study in Scarlet. The character and stories have had a profound and lasting effect on mystery writing and popular culture as a whole. We love to revisit the old stories just as much (if not more) than we like coming up with new stories. We love translating Sherlock Holmes into every medium we’ve had in that span theater, radio, movies, TV, comics, everything. Holmes has been at home on television since 1950. As television has changed, we have come up with a Holmes for that era. It’s hard to count just how many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes there have been because of so many have used elements of the detective.

Rathbone and Bruce are the classic Holmes and Watson. Others have played the roles admirably and Bruce is often criticised for his bumbling Dr. Watson, but it's their off-screen friendship and the chemistry of Rathbone and Bruce that seeps through the celluloid and adds real flesh to the characters.

Conan Doyle repeatedly said that Holmes was inspired by the real-life figure of Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, whom Conan Doyle met in 1877 and had worked for as a clerk. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing broad conclusions from minute observations.
