This started as a simple tattoo design and I added more to it to look more Mucha inspired as well as have more design overall. The woman is actually a design for the Norse goddess Hel. Which is why half of her looks the way it does. The more greenish part of her is the half that is decayed.

In Norse mythology, Hel is the ruler of the underworld or world of the dead, which is also called Helheim. She is surrounded by her siblings - the Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent. Ever get the feeling there are too many air fairy light-workers out there like I do? Too many people discount the dark side of life and spirit. I believe we are missing a greater calling. Being death workers, shadow workers, and supporting the dying and their family. Besides, our deepest fears are often our greatest teachers. One of my biggest goals is to bring in a conversation about the dark goddesses, like Hel from Viking tradition, as archetypes. Hel was a cold place for the Vikings. It is ruled over by a fierce and terrible goddess whose name is also Hel. She has one side of her face that is frozen like a white walker. The other is incredibly beautiful. She usually has a dagger and a plate that is called famine and suffering....

This is Hel, Hela of the Norns, Halja, the Death Queen, Mistress of the Darkness, Asgardian Goddess of Death, Ruler of Hel and Niffleheim, daughter of Loki. My other illustration for the “Marvel Villains Design Contest” entry back in 2012. Hela was born in Jotunheim, the other-dimensional land of the giants, one of the “Nine Worlds” of Norse mythology, and she is the daughter of the Asgardian god of mischief Loki and the sorcery wielding giantess Angerboda. Hel was one of the children of the trickster god Loki, and her kingdom was said to lie downward and northward. One half of her body is dead/ a corpse and the other side is alive/ "Young Maiden"
