This is one of my favourite images, as it depicts a cairn, on a small mountain called Side Pike, that overlooks the Langdale Valley; one of my favourite places. The Cairn has gone now, alas, but the valley remains. ;-) This image, originally captured on film, in early '84, shows the distant mountains coated in snow, but the colour on the mountain sides and the cairn itself make the image so colourful.

Little Langdale is a valley in the Lake District, England containing Little Langdale Tarn and a hamlet also called Little Langdale. A second tarn, Blea Tarn, is in a hanging valley between Little Langdale and the larger Great Langdale to the north.

Originally captured on film in February 1984, this is an image of the Langdale Valley, looking up from Elterwater to the Langdale Pikes, which are in Cumbria, United Kingdom. The last time I was there, nothing much had changed except that it was a bit more crowded. The valley is one of the most popular in the Lake District, especially popular with fell walkers (hikers) who set off from here to climb to the fell tops around the valley. The word 'fell' here is a reference to the mountains, the word itself has its origins in a time when Norsemen settled the land in the early middle ages. Little Langdale, Cumbria

A semi frozen Red tarn, with broken reflection in the ice. The view along the tarn takes you to your destination - The Pike O'Blisco. A wonderful walk from Little Langdale, with some stunning views.

If you want to enjoy a most pleasant walk, you can hardly do better than to visit Blea Tarn in the Lake District National Park in the UK. In this image, we can see the tarn through the trees that border it and beyond that part of the mountains that surround Great Langdale. It's late summer, the vegetation is lush and green with shades of yellow and gold thrown in. The weather is calm and the sky is blue. It's idyllic.

Sunset captured at Slater Bridge. Slater Bridge is a traditional packhorse bridge located in Little Langdale in the stunning English Lake District. The bridge connects the hamlet of Little Langdale with the many slate quarries in the Tiberthwaite area, including Cathedral and Hodge Close Quarry.

This image was originally captured on film in February 1984. I was visiting England and took a trip to the Lake District National Park to enjoy a few days of hiking. It was my intent to climb to the top of Pavey Ark, but had to give up because the snow was too deep and icy near the top; I hadn't come equipped with crampons. Next time. That said, it did give me an opportunity to look around at the world immediately about me. This image is of a stream I would need to cross. I was really taken with how the ice had formed and then the steam flow had lessened leaving the ice adhering to the rocks but now above the water. The hardy mountain vegetation was still in its winter-brown shade. It would soon be green again, but not today.

Loughrigg Tarn is a small, natural lake located in the Lake District of North West England, in the county of Cumbria. Located close to the famous Windermere, it sits very close to the village of Skelwith Bridge, below Loughrigg Fell. Looking out across the tarn, the magnificent Langdale Pikes are visible. The two part Slater Bridge takes advantage of a central large rock and a very long slate slab to cross the River Brathay on its way from Little Langdale Tarn to Elterwater. This is one of Lakeland’s ancient pedestrian bridges, connecting the hamlet of Little Langdale with the many slate quarries in the Tilberthwaite area, including Cathedral Quarry and the Hodge Close Quarry, Canon EOS 1D MkIII 17/40mm (L) @17mm

This image is of the delightful Blea Tarn in the Lake District National Park in the UK. Beyond the tarn are the Langdale Pikes, some of the most climbed peaks in the park. In case you're wondering why there's a fence projecting out into the lake, it's to stop the sheep from going around the end of the dry stone wall.

Originally captured on film in February 1984, this is a view from the path known as the Band on Bowfell looking westward toward the Pike of Blisco. I had set out to climb Bowfell but had to turn back about a 100 metres below the summit because of high winds and icy conditions underfoot. My disappointment was offset by some magnificent views as I slithered back down towards the valley. I did climb the mountain again a few years later, in the summer, with my daughter, who at the time of taking this shot was only three months old.
