On a day of crisp spring, I arrived at the vineyard. It seemed Spanish, ancient, a place of delicious shade and a splash of mystery. A fountain splashed playfully, Tivolian in beauty. And despite the shade, the light was intense in places, white. The walls, ochre, orange, brown, merging in colour. A place to sip fruity, rich, deep wine. A place to spend time, to linger, to contemplate. This work is rich in detail and light, a perfect souvenir of California.

The excitement of plunging into a new American cityscape, to lose myself in the streets, alone and unseen, exploring, looking up, relishing the novelty of architecture and colour. I spotted this corner of a purple building, a traffic sign adding a burst of colour, like a squirt of lime in a drink. Windows reflect light back at me. The sky struggles to be seen over the rooftop. A corner of Brooklyn. This work is rich in colour, evocative of a slice of American urban life.

A wonderful old American cruises the streets of Havana, a raspberry ripple of excitement, a wonderful pink shade, the hue of peach. It reminds of the 1950s, of sundaes in diners, topped with whipped cream and crushed nuts, of innocence, of simplicity. The buildings retain and radiate heat, a precious patch of shade from a languid tree. I am drawn by the varied colours of the houses, some minty green, cool like a mojito on ice, others orange and pink, succulent and sweet, creamy and soft. This work is full of colour, vibrant and a wonderful gift, a great addition to any collection.

A walk across the river Hull took me to a road called Strawberry Street, a place of industry and urban landscapes, a place that was quiet, at this time of day even desolate. I remembered times long gone, half a century ago when this was the area where my father worked, in a factory surrounded by walls and wire, red brick and the scent of tar. Seagulls woop. Trucks rumble by in the distance, fresh from the ferry port. And I stop to admire the pub, closed now, its net curtains hiding the interior. It reminds me of Victorian times, of foggy nights and the ghostly sound of piano music perhaps. But maybe Strawberry Street is playing tricks on me. This work makes an ideal souvenir of Hull, a great gift, or a perfect collection starter.

Buildings anchor me to childhood, their faces ageing, their modernity replaced by decay. And yet here they remain, as they have always done so since my childhood. First seen half a century ago, I remember the building, passed fleetingly on the way to pantomimes and toy shops, to dental appointments and the wonders of the museum quarter. The style evokes a halcyon period of hope, of growth and rebuilding after the war, it tingles with the spirit of the 1950s and 60s. Of all the corners and places on earth, Hull is the only one I have always known. I paint it repeatedly, recreating embers of belonging. Montmoillon as seen from the river. Montmorillon is a small hillside town in central France, a town full of charm and mystery, of steps and bells and turrets. It is full of quaint bookshops, the air scented with baking and coffee. The river flows gently, the town reflected in the water. The town enchanted me, and I had to paint it.

The heat is strong, the light bright, the water icy cold and refreshing. A man relaxes by the side of a pool, under a blue sky. The afternoon stretches, indolent, without constraints. The work is rich in colour and warmth. A perfect gift, a great addition to a collection.

A view of a Hull pub, from days gone by. A pleasing shape, Victorian, solid, windows that do not give much away about what is inside, adding a feeling of mystery and cosiness, hinting at warmth and community, a privacy. There is a haunted quality now, evocative of a time before the bulldozers and rebuilding, of cobbles and narrow streets. A man surfs the internet as the greyhound sleeps soundly on the rug, content and protective. A row of books. A taste of cosy domesticity. This work is unusual and striking, and ideal for any dog lover, with detail and a wide range of colour.

This riot of colour caught my eye and I decided I had to paint it, though even paint cannot do justice to the intense heat and glorious smell. The bush and flowers partially hide an Edinburgh terraced house, unaccustomed perhaps to the very warm weather. There is silence, but for the humming of bees.

I set off down Hessle Road, on a bright morning. I came across the Half Way, solid, Victorian, a pub with wide welcoming windows, with polychrome brickwork. In the foreground, a riot of colorful bushes, and above a soft sky. Seagulls swoop, mysterious calls, that legend holds are messages from another world. The work is filled with colour and satisfying detail. This work makes an ideal souvenir of Hull, a great gift, or a perfect collection starter.

This square work depicts architecture in Edinburgh’s New Town, a place I have grown up with, dipping in and out, visits, periods of residence, and in daydreams and memories. Hot, Scottish summers of childhood, tea and buttery scones in venues long gone, errands run, books bought, and buses caught. There is an Athenian timelessness about it, a sense of history and high culture that permeates the sandstone and rock, that whispers from patches of shadow and coolth. Snippets of life, from decades past, and yet Edinburgh remains constant, timeless and beautiful. A great souvenir of Scotland, a perfect gift.
