Classic Book stack

A surprisingly unnamed magnesian limestone sea stack on the Durham coast. The beach on which it sits, south of Seaham, is named after the Seaham Chemical Works which occupied the immediate cliff top for a short time. It was established in the 1860s, by the 1890s it had gone. But Chemical Beach continued to be abused. The sand was extensively removed by the Seaham and Londonderry Bottle Works to make glass and coal waste from the Dawdon Pit was dumped into the sea. The beach and cliff top have been cleaned up. Natural is recovering. The magnesian limestone provides a rare habitat for flora and butterflies and is under the protection of the National Trust.

South Stack Lighthouse with sea mist in the distance on a beautiful August day. The lighthouse acts as a waymark for coastal traffic and a landmark and orientation light for vessels crossing the Irish Sea to and from the ports of Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire.

Taken on the path towards the lighthouse, the walk down was well worth it to get this image. The seas around the Stack are always dramatic and sounds of the waves breaking on the rocks is always melodic and worth while taking time out to listen to. Olympus E400 150mm f/8 1/250th ISO 100 A single frame processed in PS RAW with mainly contrast adjustments made. This is not that far from how it came out from the camera. The finished file was re-sized using On1 Genuine Fractals engine.

A view across the Old Chemical Beach, passed Liddle Stack, over Noses Point, Seaham Harbour and off north to Sunderland. The Heritage Cost, has a number of little bays in the area, the beaches vary from rock and shingle to soft sand. Here the view is over the older beaches, that were used as a dumping ground for the waste materials of the mines and the chemical factory of Seahams industrial past. The wooden uprights show the route the old wagons took to the dumping areas. All cleaned now and beaches that have been awarded Blue Flag status.

Groynes like these are typical of many beaches on the North Sea and Baltic Sea. They serve to protect the coast and prevent the sand from being washed away.

The Blast Beach as it is locally known, is located just south of Seaham Harbour, in the area of Noses Point on the County Durham coastline of North East England. The beach was once a dumping ground for the old waste from the mines and chemical works - with the Chemical Beach, being close by. The sea stack, is unusual in that it has never been named.

Looking across to O'Briens Tower, Cliffs of Moher, Co.Clare, Ireland. O'Brien's Tower marks the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher, a very popular tourist destination in County Clare, Ireland. It is located a short distance from the villages Doolin and Liscannor. The tower was built on the cliffs in 1835 by local landlord and MP Sir Cornellius O'Brien as an observation tower for the Victorian tourists that frequented the cliffs at the time: "strangers visiting the Magnificent Scenery of this neighbourhood". Rocks, rocks everywhere, majestic characters like "The Old Man of Hoy" sea stack, to ancient settlements and Stone circles like "Ring of Brodgar " mysterious and wonder full. Orcadians are master "Dry Stone Dykers " and the beauty of their art is all around, the old houses often have stone slab roofs, last a good while . However the cliffs get eroded by the elements and the face of the coast changes as the stones roll in and out with the tides , constant ebb and flow, love wild places and capturing the constant changes of light and weather. Glad to share it.

We were delighted on our last visit to "The Old Man of Hoy" to find he was sporting super trendy Green Hair , we hadn't seen this before but all thought it suited him well. Usually viewed from the boat by most, its great to look down from the cliffs and get in closer. Popular with climbers who have to time their decent, ascent and back with the tides , Beautiful, Rugged, and Wild he is.
