The cobbled High Street in South Queensferry, Scotland, the town where I live. Formerly in the county of West Lothian, South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the ‘Queens Ferry’ for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews. A ferry service operated until 1964, the year the Forth Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry was created a burgh of regality in the 13th century and made a Royal Burgh in 1636. It traded actively with Europe in the 17th century.

St Mary's, or Ratho Parish Church on the northern edge of the village of Ratho, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Parts of St Mary's can be dated as far back as the 1100s, and it has been steadily added to and expanded since: to the point where the later extensions almost completely hide the original church. Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

The volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, and sited on top of it is Lindisfarne Castle, one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England. The castle can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The castle is excellently maintained by the National Trust and the view from the top truly magnificent - it is also unique. BEST VIEWED LARGER Sold 1 Postcard : 1...

The Kirk of Calder in Mid-Calder, West Lothian, Scotland is a beautiful village church which comes with a fascinating history and, over the years, a bewildering variety of names. Sometimes referred to as the Parish Kirk of Midcalder, it was until the Reformation known as St Cuthbert's. At various times since it has been known as Calder Kirk and, briefly, St John's to reflect local links with the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The name "Kirk of Calder" dates back to a merger of congregations in 1956 and has a neatness that suits the building well. St Cuthbert's Church was originally built on this site some time around 1150 and was among the properties granted to Dunfermline Abbey in the 1160s.

Inside Palma Cathedral, Majorca. The Seo was build on the site of an existing Arab mosque. The legend has it that one night in 1229, as Jaime I was on his way to recapture Majorca, his fleet was struck by a terrible storm. He vowed to the Virgin Mary that if he survived the storm, he would erect a church in her honor. And after the storm had blown over, finding himself safe and sound, he immediately undertook the project. It was a vow that was to take a long time to fulfill. begun in 1230, the cathedral was finished in 1601. Designed in the French Gothic style, the cathedral is 121 meter long and 55 meter wide. A view of Huntly Castle. Remarkable for its splendid architecture, Huntly Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland served as a baronial residence for five centuries. Some of the beautiful buildings on La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain. I never did find out what the ladder was for. Popular with both tourists and locals alike, La Rambla is an iconic and busy street in central Barcelona. It is a 1.2 kilometer-long tree-lined pedestrian mall in the Barri Gòtic, it connects Plaça Catalunya in the center with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags, Edinburgh, Scotland. Arthur's Seat is the main peak of the group of hills which form most of Holyrood Park, a remarkably wild piece of highland landscape in the centre of the city of Edinburgh, about a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city to a height of 251 m (823 feet), provides excellent panoramic views of the city, is quite easy to climb, and is a popular walk. Though it can be climbed from almost any direction, the easiest and simplest ascent is from the East, where a grassy slope rises above Dunsapie Loch. Many claim that its name is a derivation of a myriad of legends pertaining to King Arthur, such as the reference in Y Gododdin.

The Forth Road Bridge at South Queensferry, Scotland at sunset in early August. Located 9 miles (15 km) west of Edinburgh, the Forth Road Bridge spans the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry. When it was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 4th September, 1964, the bridge was the longest in the world outside the USA. The bridge is nearly 1828m (2000 yards) long while its main span, of 1006m (3300 feet), is the tenth longest in the world; its towers are over 150m (500 feet) high. The deck, which carries four lanes of traffic with two walkways, is suspended from cables which are 5.9cm (2.3 inches) in diameter and composed of 11,618 high-tensile steel wires, giving a total length of wire of 49,280 km.
