A view of South Queensferry, the town where I live. Formerly in the county of West Lothian, South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the 'Queens Ferry' for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews. A ferry service operated until 1964, the year the Forth Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry was created a burgh of regality in the 13th century and made a Royal Burgh in 1636. It traded actively with Europe in the 17th century. Buildings dating from this period include Laburnum House, the Hawes Inn, the Tolbooth Tower, the Black Castle, the Old Parish Church and Plewlands House. St Mary's ...

Lying about three miles west of South Queensferry, Scotland, is Abercorn Parish Church. The church is in the tiny hamlet of Abercorn. Abercorn Parish Church is a remarkable place. But even though a small part of it can be dated back to the 1100s, what you can see today is only part of the story. There are clues to an even longer history in the collection of stones on view in the Abercorn Museum, just inside the churchyard gates. These include Viking hog-back burial stones; a cross stone; and a carved cross-shaft dating back to the 600s. The site of Abercorn Parish Church has been sacred ground since St Ninian visited during a mission to the Picts in the late 400s. Before long his followers had established a church here, perhaps the ear...

Bell’s Brae leading to Dean Village in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like most cities, Edinburgh started as a small town with lots of other towns and villages all around. Edinburgh has swallowed them all into its ever expanding boundaries. Dean Village is one of these. Few tourists know that 15 minutes away from Princes Street lies the secluded Dean Village on the Water of Leith. Once a successful milling community, the area was once associated with poverty and decay but the buildings have been turned into designer flats and the village is now a popular residential area. The name Dean means ‘deep valley’ as the village lies 30 meters below the rest of Edinburgh.

A warm August day in East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland. Princes Street Gardens at the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre were once a lake called Nor’ Loch. The Loch, which had been the trash dump of Edinburgh for centuries was drained in order to improve access from the New Town to the Old Town. Later, the Nor’ Loch was transformed into the beautiful Princes Street Gardens we see today. On the left, you can see some of the buildings on Princes street. In the middle of the shot you can see the Scott Monument. This monument to Sir Walter Scott is located on Princes Street. A little further to the right you can see the Balmoral hotel. The hotel is located in the very heart of the city at 1 Princes Street, the main shopping area...

The oldest stone bridge in the Highlands of Scotland which was the first bridge allowing the River Dulnain to be crossed with dry feet was built in what is now Carrbridge, Inverness-shire, Scotland, between May and November 1717 by a mason called John Niccelsone. He did so at the behest of Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant at a cost of £100. The main aim of the bridge was to ensure that funeral processions from the south did not have to be delayed reaching Duthil Church when the river was in spate and unfordable. The bridge was damaged by a great flood (the Muckle Spate) in 1829, leaving the present fragile looking archway we see today. The Chrysler Building taken from the viewing platform at the top of the Empire State Building. The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, located on the east side of Manhattan at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Standing at 319 m (1,047 ft) high, it was briefly the world's tallest building before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. However, the Chrysler Building remains the world's tallest brick building. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the second tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 365.8 m (1,200 ft) Bank of America building, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition, the...

I took this shot of the Forth Bridge on Friday 10th April 09. For those of us who live here, it is always called The Bridge - hence the title of this shot. This unique steel Cantilever Bridge with three diamond-shaped towers crosses the river Forth at South Queensferry, Scotland. The bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and Benjamin Baker. The bridge was built by Sir William Arrol. Constructed started in 1883. The bridge was opened in 1890 at a cost of £2.5m and 57 fatalities among the construction crew (it is now believed that the actual death toll is likely to have been closer to 80). The bridge is still in use today, carrying the railways to the north from Edinburgh.

St. Machan Church in the Parish of Strathbrock, West Lothian, Scotland. The Parish of Strathbrock was created in 1976 when the Parishes of Ecclesmachan (which had become vacant) and Uphall North were united by West Lothian Presbytery. The new parish is a mixture of rural and lightly urban land stretching from the farmlands of Bangour through the villages of Ecclesmachan and Uphall. As a result of boundary changes part of Dechmont and the hamlet of Threemiletown were lost but the housing areas of North West Broxburn were added. The Parish has two beautiful old Churches steeped in history; St Machan in Ecclesmachan (shown here_) and St Nicholas in Uphall.

The view looking North from the top of Cairnpapple Hill in West Lothian, Scotland. At 310m or just over 1000ft in height the hill offers one of the best viewpoints in central Scotland. In the centre of the shot on the southern banks of the River Forth is the town of Grangemouth (where joak of RB fame resides). Grangemouth would be a pleasant place to live except that the town is dominated by the extremely large Grangemouth Oil Refinery with its numerous gas flares and cooling towers visible across a wide area of the Scottish Lowlands (look on joak's page for examples). Cairnpapple Hill is situated in the Hilderston Hills within the western range of the Bathgate Hills in the parish of Torphichen, West Lothian, in south-east Scotland.
