The Fontana di Trevi or Trevi Fountain is the most famous and arguably the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome. This impressive monument dominates the small Trevi square located in the Quirinale district. Taming of the waters is the theme of the gigantic scheme that tumbles forward, mixing water and rockwork, and filling the small square. Tritons guide Neptune's shell chariot, taming seahorses (hippocamps). In the center (shown in this shot) is superimposed a robustly modelled triumphal arch. The small resort of Fornells lies on the north coast of Menorca. It is famous for its seafood restaurants. Apparently King Carlos of Spain sails into Fornells bay occasionally to partake! One of the famous dishes is Caldereta de Ilagosta, meaning spiny lobster stew, delicious! Menorca is one of the Spanish Balearic Islands, and lies off the coast of Spain in the Western Mediterranean. Pittencrieff Park or “The Glen” as it is more commonly known as by the locals in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland extends to 76 acres of grass areas, landscaping, statues, ponds, rockeries, nature walks, dog exercise area, play areas, historic areas, and was given in trust by Andrew Carnegie (the Dunfermline-born American industrialist, businessman, and major philanthropist) to the people of his birthplace. This scene shows a small part of the actual glen (in Scotland, a Glen is a Valley) that the whole park is locally named after. Before Carnegie purchased the park in 1902, Pittencrieff Park formed the estate and grounds of the house, owned by the Lairds of Pittencrieff.

A 'mob' of hang gliders flying above the Tinto Hills. The Tinto Hills are a small group of hills, called the 'hills of fire'. The name derives from the exposed red felsite rock that can be seen near the summit. The Tinto range can be found five miles south of the town of Lanark, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The largest of the hills is Tinto Hill itself. Hang gliding has been popular over Tinto Hill for a number of years, and the distance record for a hang-gliding flight from within Scotland was broken at Tinto Hill in 1996, with a flight that ended south of the border in England. Due to the hills being classified as SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) the hang-gliding club which uses Tinto has an agreement with the relevant body...

No trip to Monaco is complete without at least a drink at the café just next to the casino and across the street from the Hôtel de Paris. Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

St. Nicholas Church in the Parish of Strathbrock, West Lothian, Scotland. The Parish of Strathbrock was created in 1976 when the Parishes of Ecclesmachan (which had become vacant) and Uphall North were united by West Lothian Presbytery. The new parish is a mixture of rural and lightly urban land stretching from the farmlands of Bangour through the villages of Ecclesmachan and Uphall. As a result of boundary changes part of Dechmont and the hamlet of Threemiletown were lost but the housing areas of North West Broxburn were added. The Parish has two beautiful old Churches steeped in history; St Machan in Ecclesmachan and St Nicholas (shown here_) in Uphall. St. Nicholas Church dates from the 12th century.

The open ground of Magdalen Fields in Berwick-upon-Tweed (the northernmost town in England), Northumberland, England, is protected by the Bell Tower and an earthwork traverse line, which ends with the Great Bulwark Redoubt. The Bell Tower was built in 1577. It overlies an earlier tower on the line of the town defenses built by Edward I in 1296. Berwick-upon-Tweed (pronunciation: berɪk), on the east coast at the mouth of the River Tweed is situated 2.5 miles (4 km) south of the Scottish border and forms part of the wider Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed local government district. In the centre of Birnam, Perthshire, Scotland, is St Mary's Church, complete with its clock tower. The church was built in 1858 and is set in its own well cared for churchyard. The clock tower was added in 1883. Windows in the church are by a number of different designers, including William Morris. Situated on the banks of the River Tay, the conservation village of Birnam is home to the Birnam Oak, the last remaining example of Birnam Wood so famous from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. A quiet little corner of Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland. This little slice of greenery is sandwiched between Market Street and the railway tracks leading into Waverley Station. Towering over the gardens on the right is the Bank of Scotland Building at the Mound. Torphichen Preceptory in the village of Torphichen, West Lothian, Scotland is an unusual remnant of a little known corner of Scottish history. It comprises the tower and the two transepts of the church associated with the Preceptory of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The Order maintained just two such establishments in Britain, the other being in London. Torphichen is therefore the sole Scottish link with an Order whose name resonates through history: from its formation in the Crusades to its occupation of Malta in the face of Turkish siege in 1565, and beyond. The Order of St John of Jerusalem was suppressed in Scotland after the Reformation in 1560, but it was reconstituted here.

A view from the Piazza del Popolo, looking up to the Piazza del Pincio, Rome, Italy. These lovely gardens (not shown here) overlook one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, Piazza del Popolo. There were gardens here even in the time of Ancient Rome, and it is said that they were quite fabulous. Looking down Marygate to the Guildhall in Berwick-upon-Tweed (the northernmost town in England), Northumberland, England. Built in the 1750s, the Guildhall is possibly the town's most handsome building, facing and dominating broad Marygate. Of rich brown stone in a Classical design, it has a grand portico with giant Tuscan columns and a tall spire. The bells ring for Holy Trinity Church as well as the curfew. The top floor used to be a jail and prisoners were aired on the balcony round the roof. The beautiful bay and hilly town of Villefranche-sur-Mer in the South of France. Cruise ships come in most days through the summer months.

"St Michael is kinde to strangers". So runs the motto of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. St Michael is the patron saint of the town and, in the form of the ancient church of that name, he still stands guard above its inhabitants, both residents and strangers alike. Although it is undoubtedly of earlier origin the first mention of "the great church of Linlithgow" is in a charter of 1138 in which King David I gifted it "with all its chapels, lands and other rights" to the Cathedral of St Andrews. On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated by David de Bernham, Bishop of St Andrews. A partial shot of the north span of the Forth Bridge and the island of Inchgarvie (or Inch Garvie) at South Queensferry, Scotland. Inchgarvie contains the remains of a castle, coast battery and artillery fortifications. Famously during WWII, the Germans published a blurry aerial photograph showing the Rail bridge and what they claimed was a plume of smoke from a direct hit on the bridge. Of course they had missed and mistook Inch Garvie for the smoke. The name 'Inch Garvie' is probably originally of Gaelic derivation, meaning 'rough island'. Best viewed Larger. The cobbled High Street in South Queensferry, Scotland, the town where I live. Formerly in the county of West Lothian, South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the ‘Queens Ferry’ for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews. A ferry service operated until 1964, the year the Forth Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry was created a burgh of regality in the 13th century and made a Royal Burgh in 1636. It traded actively with Europe in the 17th century.

The ruin of Armadale Castle on the beautiful Isle of Skye, Scotland. In 1855 fire destroyed much of the original house which was partly replaced by the present central block designed by David Bryce. Today, the original part of the castle is a sculptured ruin and the wonderful gardens contain a fine selection of plants from around the world.
