The top of the dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy, begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until the modern era, the dome was one of the largest in the world, being surpassed in width only by that of the Pantheon in Rome. It remains the largest brick dome every constructed.

The three magnificent buildings in the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy. On the left, the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St. John) - begun in 1296 and completed in 1436. On the right, the Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower) - begun in 1334 and completed in 1359. In the centre, the cathedral church, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) - begun in 1059 and completed in 1128. The exterior walls of all three buildings are faced in alternate vertical and horizontal bands of polychrome marble from Carrara (white), Prato (green), Siena (red), Lavenza and a few other places.

The Eastern Door of the Baptistry of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, that is, the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy. This is the masterpiece of Ghiberti, who worked on it for 27 years, lavishing on it all the richness of his imagination, combined with a fine sense of composition and profound knowledge of the modeller's art. Michelangelo defined the door as fit to be the "gate of Paradise". The door, a universally admired masterpiece, has ten panels depicting Biblical scenes. At the centre of the door at left is the self-portrait of Ghiberti. The door's original gilding has recently been recovered from beneath the patina formed over the centuries. It was badly damaged by Florence's flood in 1966 when the waters of the Arn...

The huge Duomo located in the Piazza dei Maracoli (Square of Miracles) in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. The Duomo is 100 yards long, with a massive nave, flanked by two aisles and 68 monolithic columns, in the Romanesque style. The pulpit, considered by many as the most beautiful in Italy, was carved by Giovanni Pisano, who also did much of the carving in the baptistry. Florence's Duomo is the city's most iconic landmark. Capped by Filippo Brunelleschi's red-tiled cupola, it's a staggering construction whose breathtaking pink, white and green marble facade and graceful campanile (bell tower) dominate the medieval cityscape. Sienese architect Arnolfo di Cambio began work on it in 1296, but construction took almost 150 years and it wasn't consecrated until 1436. I took this photo on a visit there and gave it a painterly treatment in CC and Topaz.
