It was formerly present across mainland Australia, but became extinct there around 3,500 years ago; it is now confined to the island of Tasmania. The size of a small dog, the Tasmanian devil became the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world following the extinction of the thylacine in 1936.

The adorably boisterous Tasmanian devil is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world, and their reintroduction through conservation programs to mainland Australia could mean more scavenging, fewer feral pests, healthier habitats, and a much-needed biodiversity glow-up. Description: Part of a collection of Australian animals by Englishman John Gould, 1804 - 1881. Renown for his studies in Australian animals, particularly in Tasmania where he sailed to from England to study native animals and birds. He was also an accomplished artist, sketching and hand painting what he saw with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth.
Description: The Tasmanian Tiger, sadly extinct, was a large marsupial predator, who carried their young in a pouch. I hope that one day, we may see them in the flesh again, but we are lucky to have it’s image.
