Aviation is the activities surrounding mechanical flight and the aircraft industry. Aircraft includes fixed-wing and rotary-wing types, morphable wings, wing-less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air craft such as hot air balloons and airships. Aviation began in the 18th century with the development of the hot air balloon, an apparatus capable of atmospheric displacement through buoyancy. Some of the most significant advancements in aviation technology came with the controlled gliding flying of Otto Lilienthal in 1896; then a large step in significance came with the construction of the first powered airplane by the Wright brothers in the early 1900s.

For light aircraft, usually full power is used during takeoff. Large transport category (airliner) aircraft may use a reduced power for takeoff, where less than full power is applied in order to prolong engine life, reduce maintenance costs and reduce noise emissions. In some emergency cases, the power used can then be increased to increase the aircraft's performance. Before takeoff, the engines, particularly piston engines, are routinely run up at high power to check for engine-related problems. The aircraft is permitted to accelerate to rotation speed (often referred to as Vr).

A wing is a type of fin that produces lift, while moving through air or some other fluid. As such, wings have streamlined cross-sections that are subject to aerodynamic forces and act as airfoils. A wing's aerodynamic efficiency is expressed as its lift-to-drag ratio. The lift a wing generates at a given speed and angle of attack can be one to two orders of magnitude greater than the total drag on the wing. A high lift-to-drag ratio requires a significantly smaller thrust to propel the wings through the air at sufficient lift.

Newhall - Vapour Trail

A digital composite of Spitfires flying out of the sun to attack. All images used are my own. Three separate aircraft images and a sky image of my own, blended together in CS3.

Image of three Spitfires of 222 Squadron with an added background of a Harris Hawk. The Spitfire image is the same one replicated twice from the original. I then researched 222 squadron and found two more aircraft registrations, which I then changed on the two replicated planes. I added the Harris Hawk image which is a picture of a Harris Hawk on the glove in a zoo against a sunset sky of my own. I also cloned out the glove. The images were all blended together in CS3 using layers and with some help from Nik Color Efex filters. A total of five images were used to create this image.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Lancaster and Hurricane. HDR created from one RAW file processed as five DNG files in Photomatix, adjustments in CS6 with some help from Topaz and Nik Filters. Sky added from one of my own images. Nikon D7100 with Sigma 150-500 zoom.
