Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Fresno Nightcrawler, a cryptid first sighted in 2007 in Fresno, CA on surveillance footage of a man’s front yard. It has been described as a ghostly pale, very tall pair of pants, or a white semi humanoid figure with no arms and extremely long legs. Sightings of similar creatures were reported in Yosemite National Park in 2011, as well as in Montana and Poland. Although some sightings have proven to be hoaxes, the original footage has yet to be disproven, and so the mystery remains. My design was inspired by the description of the Fresno Nightcrawler as a “tall pair of pants”, which reminded me of the high waisted sailor pants popular among women in the 1930s and 1940s.

Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Loch Ness Monster, a creature sighted in Loch Ness in Scotland, and arguably one of the most famous cryptids in the world. Nessie, as the creature is also known, is often described as being very large, with dark skin, a long neck, and one or more humps on its back. The earliest documented sighting of a Nessie-like creature dates to the 7th century A.D. in the “Life of St. Columba”. The most well-known modern sightings began in the 1930s, and people continue to report seeing a large creature in Loch Ness to this day. My design was influenced by Nessie’s Scottish heritage, as well as punk and Victorian fashion.

Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Alicanto, a legendary bird from the Atacama Desert in Chile. Described as a nocturnal bird that feeds exclusively on the ore of gold, silver and/or copper, their feathers shine with the color of the metal they ingest. Although their wings are functional, the Alicanto is flightless, weighed down by the metal ores they ingest. When full, they can barely drag themselves along the ground, but they can run rather quickly at other times. They live around mines and nest in caves. The female lays two eggs, which are the color of the metal she has been eating. Those in search of mines or buried treasure may seek the Alicanto, hoping to be led to what they seek, sometimes with dire consequences.

Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Kentucky Goblins (aka Hopkinsville Goblins, aka Kelly Green Men), alleged extraterrestrial beings who were encountered near the communities of Kelly and Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1955, in conjunction with a UFO sighting. They were described as being 2.5-3.5feet tall, silver skin, with wide set glowing yellow eyes with white rims, muscular upper bodies and spindly lower bodies, and hands with talons and webbing between the fingers. My design was also heavily influenced by women’s fashion of 1955, and 1950s sci-fi depictions of UFOs, with a whimsical Kentucky Goblins/UFO/shooting star print dress, and a chic UFO-shaped hat.
Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Loveland Frog, a humanoid creature first sighted in Loveleand, Ohio in 1955, although the 1972 sightings by police officers are, perhaps, more well known. The creatures were described as humanoid frogs with leathery skin standing approximately 3-4 feet high. They were either standing at the side of a road, or under or over a bridge. One of them was said to be holding a wand-like object over his head, and sparks were flying out of it. The creature is also known as the Loveland Frogman or the Loveland Lizard.
Description: A fashion illustration inspired by the Flatwoods Monster of West Virginia, also known as Braxie. This creature was sighted in 1952 after a bright light was seen crossing the night sky. It was described as standing about 10ft tall, with a red face, a dark green body, a spade-shaped hood, eyes that emitted a greenish-orange light, and claw-like hands. The group who reported the sighting also mentioned smelling a pungent mist. Some believe that the light in the sky prior to the sighting was a UFO.

Description: Lí Ban was a 6th century Irish princess. She & her dog were the sole survivors of a great flood, which created Lough Neagh. After a year living in a cave under the lake, she prayed and was turned into a mermaid with a salmon tail, her dog was transformed into an otter. They made it to the sea, and swam for 300 years until she was caught in a net by a monk, Beoan. She told him her story and agreed to meet him in a year. When they met, she was given a choice of being baptized and immediately going to heaven, or swimming for 300 years more in the sea. She chose the former, was baptized “Muirgen”, and died. She was canonized in the Irish Church as St. Muirgen, her feast day is January 27. Some pagans revere her as a sea goddess.

Description: In Yakut folklore Chyskhaan, the Lord of the Cold, is the personification of winter. Each year, in later September/early October, he comes down from the Arctic Ocean to the region of Yakutia ( aka Sakha Republic), bringing the cold with him step by step. He wears a headpiece with two horns, one from a bull and one from a wooly mammoth. The first horn falls off in the end of January, the second in February. He is slowly melting, but before he melts completely, he flows back to the Arctic on the Lena River. He repeats this cycle every year, and is accompanied by Kharchaana, the Snow Maiden. The border was inspired by a traditional Yakut design symbolizing the sky and the stars, but I replaced the stars with snowflakes.
