The Syilx Okanagan people have preserved ancient accounts of a spirit dwelling in the lake for centuries. The earliest recorded account by a non indigenous person is from 1855, when a settler reported an unseen force dragged his horses underwater when they were swimming across the lake. The first detailed description of the creature was recorded by pioneer Susan Allison in 1872, and sightings continue to be reported to this day.

Takes of this creature are found throughout the American West, as well as Lake Superior. My design was inspired by tales of the Jackalope from the American West, and consists of a sage green cotton petticoat dress with brown leather button up boots and corset belt, turquoise and silver Jackalope jewelry, and a brown leather Jackalope headband. Hungry Jackalopes munch on prickly pear cactus fruit, one of their favorite foods, to create the border.
