It has had many different lenses and foghorn sounds, some of which were controversial, causing rounds of noise complaints. Today, the light continues in service, displaying a fixed green light. Description: "Hotel Donaldson Fargo ND" I knew nothing about this hotel when I photographed this sign; it just caught my eye. What I learned later: Originally built in 1893 by the Odd Fellows Lodge after a fire destroyed much of downtown Fargo. In the mid-1900s, it became a hotel and went through many owners over time. Around 2000, the hotel, which was in great disrepair, was bought once again by another owner; renovations began to bring it back to life, and it was reborn as a modern luxury boutique. Description: “Fargo ND Theater” The Fargo theater opened in 1926, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in March 2026 held its 100th-year celebration. This iconic venue, located in the heart of downtown Fargo, is known for its beautiful Art Deco design, which has been meticulously restored. Originally part of a vast vaudeville network, linking small towns to larger cities. Today, it hosts independent films, live concerts, comedy shows, and community events. Description: "Aegean Dream Tanker at Port Aransas Texas" The Aegean Dream is a large crude oil tanker owned by Arcadia Shipmanagement, a Greek company, while "Arcadia Hellas" refers to the company itself. I'm always on the lookout for ships in the port when I'm birdwatching at Charlie's Pasture Preserve in Port Aransas, Texas. Description: The public art sculpture on the Norwood Bridge in Winnipeg, Canada, is titled River Arch and was created by artist Catherine Widgery. While the top of the two tall columns resembled glowing flames to me from a distance, I discovered the design actually depicts golden sheaves of wheat, for the agricultural abundance and history of the Canadian Prairies. I transformed my original photograph with a subtle painterly effect, creating photo art while preserving the scene, and then converted it to black and white. Description: I captured this Great Blue Heron as it looked for a place to land among all the resting ducks. So many birds to see when birdwatching from the nearly one-mile boardwalk at the South Padre Island Nature Center. The boardwalk goes over brackish water and on out to the Laguna Madre, all areas have great habitat with tall grasses, reeds, and Mangroves. Description: The Flood Memorial Monument (also known as the Flood Memorial Obelisk) is a prominent historical landmark on the banks of the Red River in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It serves as a literal, physical yardstick mapping out the region's long struggle with the Red River of the North. 1997: The highest band at the top represents the devastating "500-year flood". The river crested at an unprecedented 54.35 feet, forcing the total evacuation of over 50,000 residents across Grand Forks, ND, and East Grand Forks, MN. Description: "Flycatcher with Dragonfly" On a recent birding trip to Oklahoma's Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, I lucked out with this close-up of a native Eastern Phoebe. I was waiting inside a bird blind when this little flycatcher landed right on the rusty top edge of the structure, perfectly posing with a freshly caught dragonfly in its bill. With the minimalist composition and warm, rustic textures, I think it would make a beautiful addition to a modern rustic gallery wall. Description: "Red-winged Blackbird Calling Across the Wetlands" While walking the boardwalk near the South Padre Island Convention Center, I heard this Red-winged Blackbird long before I focused my camera on him. Perched atop a weathered post, he was calling loudly and proudly, flashing his brilliant red-and-gold shoulder patches as he announced his presence across the wetlands. Moments like this are what I enjoy most about bird photography; not just seeing the bird, but witnessing the behavior that makes the scene come alive. Description: "Green Heron on a Weathered Perch" Photographed at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in early May, this Green Heron chose a weathered, leafless branch as its perch despite the surrounding spring greenery. The contrast between its rich plumage and the stark, twisting branches produced one of those shots I hope for but don't always get. Description: "The Ever-Singing Dickcissel" I captured this stunning moment from my car window on June 3rd while exploring a quiet, rural dirt road. Perched high on a delicate branch against the soft morning sky, this beautiful male Dickcissel (Spiza americana) was completely lost in his melody, pouring his heart out into the open prairie air. You can practically hear his buzzing, rhythmic call through the crisp details of his vibrant yellow chest, black throat bib, and rich chestnut shoulders. The best place to find Dickcissels is in overgrown pastures, savannahs, and croplands in the central Great Plains.
