Description: The Humayun Darwaza gate to the Purana Quila as seen from the inside of the citadel. The gate allows two levels of entry to the fort, at what would have been the level of the moat and above that via a drawbridge. The Purana Qila in present day Delhi, India, is believed to have been built under Humayun and Sher Shah Suri (about 1533 onwards). Archeological excavations within the walls have, however, discovered structures believed to date to 900BC. A blanket of mist and possibly of pollution is hangs over the landscape. Description: The Purana Qila is a citadel in Delhi, India supposedly dating back to about the year 1533 when Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun, although much more ancient structures have been discovered within its walls. The western walls of the citadel are lined with hallways or rooms, many of which are now in ruins. The ruins in this image show the type of structures behind the wall better than would be seen from the intact rooms as those are closed to the public. The main outside wall is the one with the blackened mortar. The Archeological Service, whose offices are in some of the intact rooms, is undertaking conservation work on the structures seen here.
