Watercolor painting of 'Sleeping Smaug', fanart based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was made as a custom order for a great Tolkien fan from UK. I like how the golden glow and foreground details turned out. The way Smaug grabs his treasure with his wings was intended - I wanted him to look all greedy and malvolent even though his fast asleep. Original painting was painted on Fabriano Watercolor Paper (A2 size) using White Nights Watercolors. It took me about 40 hours to finish this artwork. I am going to make more Tolkien inspired illustrations in the future :) I will be happy to hear your suggestions!

Design made from an original watercolor illustration by Katarzyna Kmiecik. This is my older watercolor painting (from 2011) of Smaug the dragon, based on books by J.R.R. Tolkien. It's titled 'Smaug's Cave' and I love it so much that I kept the original for myself. I always wanted to create something similar to Alan Lee's works and I feel like a did a good job with this one. I made this artwork even before the first part of the book ecranisation came out! It has a rather cool composition and some nice colors I don't get to use very often while painting architecture or landscapes. I am going to make more Tolkien inspired illustrations in the future :) I will be happy to hear your suggestions!

Smaug's Cave
This design was made from a pencil drawing is a very realistic and atmospheric vision of the future world (by Katarzyna Kmiecik). The idea was that our civilization had to leave Earth as it was polluted and destroyed beyond repair, and the last living people had to build a life for themselves from scratch on another planet (that's why there are three moons), in different galaxy. Architecture is situated in a barren landscape made of bathed rock. The building itself comes of as foreign and alien, with its smooth texture and strange shapes. Moon and lights makes the whole picture look mysterious and moody.

City in the far future
Design made from a mixed media illustration (black pen + black watercolor + white colored pencil) of cyborg, made in 2011 by Katarzyna Kmiecik. This black and white image shows an android woman that humankind had forgotten about somewhere in deep future. I think there's not a single human alive and she is lonely, sad and angry at the same time. Nobody has been here for a long time but her, alone. Not only her face, but the whole picture with its excellent lightning lets the viewer feel the sad and desolate mood. Android stays in the center of attention and somehow "speaks" to a viewer, even though the surroundings are very complex and detailed with all the construction elements such as girders, steel profiles, trapezoidal meta...

Forgotten Creation
Design made from a pencil drawing by Katarzyna Kmiecik. Futuristic and eye catching vision of the future world with its buildings, complicated structures and advanced technology. Drawing in general looks very elaborate and well detailed. It has some realistic textures, as well as very accurate perspective. It also has exquisite crosshatching shading and dynamic pencil marks, that look both neat and elegant. Vapor cloud in the foreground and the beautiful sky, that overcast the scene, soften the hard edges of buildings and diversify the composition. This illustration harkens back to classic Sci Fi of the 20's and 30's, when technology was recognized for what it was - essentially benevolent. That is to say, if there were a...
