Jon Pertwee was the third incarnation of the Doctor from 1970 to 1974. His first episode was also the first episode of Doctor Who in color. He dressed with frilly laces and colorful attire, which earned him the nickname of the Dandy Doctor (by the first Doctor during the 10th anniversary episode, The Three Doctors), but he was the first Doctor to really kick ass. He's often referred to by whovians as the first version of the Doctor that was something of a super hero because he knew martial arts and was more daring and adventurous than his predecessors. There's a lot of the 12th Doctor in Pertwee, or rather, a lot of the 3rd Doctor in Capaldi.

The Dandy
When Doctor Who returned to the television in 2005, we learned that the Doctor was the last time lord. At some point between the 8th Doctor and the 9th Doctor, the time war occurred. The time war was waged primarily between the Time Lords and the Daleks, both of which wanted to destroy the universe. The Doctor alludes to the fact that he destroyed his own people and the Daleks to save the universe. This little plot device, which was only alluded to once the new series was launched, provided key character attributes, which I believe played a significant role in the show's success - the Doctor was alone, the last of his kind, and it was the result of his own actions. These character faults provided the emotional anchors to the 9th, 10th an...

This my first digital painting in a few years. It was inspired by the climax in the 'Parting of the Ways' of Doctor Who Series One. I think this might be the beginning of a series on the Doctor's Companions. Rose was a slow burner in most regards. I didn't like her the first couple times I tried watching Doctor Who. But by the end of Season one, especially at this moment, I loved her. Now it's difficult to imagine Doctor Who without Rose.

This was my first Doctor Who painting. I was watching a short webisode prior to the ‘Bells of St. John.’ At this time, the Doctor had lost the Ponds and had two strange encounters with the impossible girl. He was alone. Drifting lazily on a swing. I’d been struggling with my own loneliness for years following my divorce. Here, the Doctor captured how I’d been feeling, so I decided to paint it because I wanted it on my wall. This led me to paint others. Less than a year later, my walls were covered with Doctor Who paintings.

This painting was commissioned by my cousin, who lives in the Vegas area. He's a lawyer and also obsessed with Doctor Who. He wanted a western-themed Doctor Who painting to hang in his office. I thought this image portrayed exactly what he wanted. If you're interested in commissioning a painting, please visit www.jephwho.com.

The 'Cosmic Hobo.' Patrick Troughton. He played the Doctor between 1966 and 1969. The decision to write the regeneration features of the Doctor came after the first Doctor, William Hartnell, had health problems and struggled with his lines. The show was a hit and obviously, the producers didn't want the show to end, so they considered replacing Hartnell with a lookalike, as had been done on many shows in the past when an actor couldn't continue with the role. Fortunately, the creators had the idea that the Doctor, being an alien, could simply regenerate every cell in his body when he died. This way, they could cast a fresh, completely different actor without all the fuss of "does he really look like and act like the original Doctor?" ...

Human Progress
There's this short moment at the end of the two-part story Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead. Both Donna and the Doctor have experienced deep loss. Donna lost her stuttering husband she met while in the fake reality of the library planet's hard drive. And the Doctor lost River Song, a stranger who knew his name and clearly had a heavy and major impact on his future. Donna asks the Doctor if he's alright. He responds with "I'm always alright." And Donna asks if that's time lord code for "really not alright." The Doctor asks why and Donna says in a somber tone, "Because I'm alright too." The dialogue is striking and heavy, because the implication of their shared pain is tangible in their faces even though they are saying ...

This is a recreation of an image taken from the Series 8 episode, ‘Listen,’ but the scene is a flashback to the 50 Year anniversary episode - Day of the Doctor. This is perhaps the heaviest scene in all of Doctor Who mythology, because here, the Doctor is looking on the barn where he slept as a child, considering the decision he had to make - ending the Time War by committing genocide. A decision that would make him a lonely man. If you're interested in purchasing the original painting, please visit http://www.jephwho.com/The%20Moment.html

Wilfred Mott is every Whovian’s grandfather. Throughout series Four, we knew that the Doctor’s life would end with four knocks. Everyone assumed the four knocks was leading to the Master. And after the Doctor defeated the Master and Rassilon, it was Wilfred’s selfless mindset that led to the 10th Doctor’s demise. Also, Wilfred and the Four Knocks sounds like a cool indie rock band. The background, starry tardis, was inspired by Alice X Zhang. Peter Capaldi’s first episode as the Doctor was funny, tense, and very different from previous Doctors. This scene stuck out to me, so I painted it immediately afterwards. The texture of the scene. The gravity of two men unsure of their identity...unsure of who was the monster.

This is one of my biggest paintings. I wanted a painting that looked into the Tardis. Initially, I wanted the Doctor to have his hand out-stretched, beckoning me to join him. But I wondered too much if I was worthy of such adventures. I have struggled with social anxieties a lot and have found it too easy to retreat into myself (and into shows like this). So instead, I had the Doctor look as though he was considering me - Are you ready to follow the Mad Man in the box? Are you willing to conquer the real world? Some day.

Mad Man in a Box
This is based on a promo picture for the ‘Listen’ episode in Series 8. This was one of my favorite episodes. As someone with a long history of sleep walking and talking to strange shadows in my sleep, this episode really freaked me out. It also set the foundation of the Doctor’s ‘no weapon’ approach to saving the universe, not to mention, we got our first glimpse of the Doctor as a scared child on Gallifrey. Heaven Sent from Doctor Who season 9 is a masterpiece of storytelling. The visuals and directing are incredible, but the story is what shines. I'm particularly fond of the shepherd boy's tale used to illustrate the billions of years the Doctor spent in the clockwork, puzzle hell running from the veil. The metaphor - a bird sharpens its beak on a granite mountain once every 100 years or so, and the time it takes for the mountain to be worn down from the sharpening of birds beaks...is one second in eternity - has often been used in literature. James Joyce uses it, most notably, in 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.'
