Vaquitas are the world’s most endangered marine mammals. They weren’t discovered until 1958 but due to illegal fishing 1 in 5 vaquitas would drown in gillnets. Now there population is estimated at only 12 individuals. They have so little genetic diversity left there isn’t much hope for the restoration of these species. Unfortunately because they weren’t discovered until 1958 and because they are so close to extinction little is even known about them.
