Based in Skull Ridge Mountain on the planet Lanupa, Rennod ruled the spacelanes for years, but his hunt for the treasure planet At Attin resulted in the death of the entire crew after a mutiny and the Cinder became buried in a forest. Its First Mate was the droid SM-33. In 9 ABY, a youngling called Wim discovered it and, together with three children called Neel, Fern and KB, investigated the ship but they accidentally activated its engines and hyperdrive and jumped into hyperspace. The group of kids then forged an alliance with SM-33 and a Force-sensitive man called Jod Na Nawood to find their way back home and avoid a band of pirates led by Captain Brutus.

It was written in one day, July 11, 1958, and first published in the March 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction after being rejected by Playboy. The story involves a number of paradoxes caused by time travel. In 1980, it was nominated for the Balrog Award for short fiction. "'—All You Zombies—'" further develops themes explored by the author in a previous work: "By His Bootstraps", published some 18 years earlier. Some of the same elements also appear later in The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (1985), including the Circle of Ouroboros and the Temporal Corps.
