Description: I was amazed by this pattern, caused by a persistent wind separating the lighter sand from the heavier sand, sculpting waves. I used a longer focal length to compress the scene into an illusion of liquid waves under the sky. It even looks like the wind is whipping the tops off the waves, as it does on the sea.

Description: You might think of Rhinos as tough, prehistoric beasts armed with lethal weapons whose only enemies are poachers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But in fact, they are poor sighted and respectful of territories. Having observed them for many hours, they appear to me to be quite anxious much of the time. This guy is out of his territory and has wandered onto the vast Etosha Pan. He is looking for a place to come "ashore" that does not transgress another's territory.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As their natural range becomes smaller, due to human activity, more and more Rhinos find themselves in conflict with their own species.
Description: Leopard (Panthera pardus). These are both the most successful and most retiring of all the Big Cats. They adapt well to changing circumstances and will prey on just about anything that moves. They are very shy and usually very difficult to see in the wild. Leopards one ranged throughout Africa, the Middle East and Africa but through human encroachment on their habitat, they occur today in about 25% of their former range. Numbers are difficult to estimate given their reclusive nature but they are listed as Vulnerable on the ICUN Red List. Description: In drought stricken central Kenya in September 2017 an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) resorts to scraping grass from the dusty plain to eke out a meal. He spends hours kicking the dirt with his toenails. He gathers up the grass threads and shakes them free of the abrasive soil that would otherwise grind down his teeth. He gets six sets of teeth in his lifetime and when those are gone he will starve to death.
Description: The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) does not survive in captivity and may only be seen in the wild in the mountains of three countries: Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are Critically Endangered, but their numbers are now at about 880 and slowly rising thanks to the tireless efforts of rangers, soldiers and others. The species first came to the attention of most of us through the work of American Primatologist, Dian Fossey. Fossey lived in the mountains, studying the gorillas from 1967 until her murder in 1985.
Description: Originally built as a set for the iconic Australian movie, "The Man from Snowy River":http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084296/ this "hut" was nothing more than a convincing facade, interior backdrop and roof. The back of the structure was left open to enable access for cameras and lighting. After the film crews departed, the hut and it's superb location on the Clear Hills became a mecca for 4x4 enthusiasts. But the rather flimsy construction proved inadequate to resist the alpine winter and soon started falling apart. Local 4x4 drivers banded together and commenced lengthy negotiations with local council and "green" interests who wanted the "hut" removed, the entire site returned to it's natural state and the access track closed. ...
