Description: Prior to entering politics and becoming the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter was a simple peanut farmer...a fact used both for and against him during his 1976 campaign. This image - that of a big-toothed, grinning peanut - was pervasive in the run-up to the election, used on all types of political paraphernalia from buttons to signs and everything in-between. The sexual revolution was in full swing, and a generation distrustful of the government formed a counter-culture the valued art, music, and free love over and above norms that would make them tools of the traditional capitalist culture. At the same time, not all was well in the world. The war in Vietnam raged on, to mixed sentiment at home. "Make Love, Not War" became a rallying phrase of the anti-establishment peace movement much to the chagrin of the older generation. Upon seeing young protestors take the slogan to the streets of California, Ronald Reagan famously remarked: "Those guys look like they can't make either of both." Ouch.

The Gulf War started, the USSR ended, a compound in Waco was sieged, the Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed, and AIDS became an epidemic. In the face of all that, we learned the importance of living for NOW...and our culture reinforced that, perhaps no better than in the smash musical that taught us there is "no day but today."
