Manticore (White line) Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: The Manticore (Persian for Man eater) is a mythical beast from Persian and Greek mythology. The typical manticore is a vicious predator with the body of a lion, the head of a man, and the tail of a scorpion or dragon. Later modern depictions sometimes now add dragon wings. The myth likely comes from Persian descriptions of Tigers in the Caspian and/or India. In medieval western tradition they came to be associated with the devil, and along with the Greeks they often recorded them as real animals.

Cross Staff and Crowns (Nottingham City crest, White line) Tapestry

Description: This is a hand drawn representation of the cross staff and crowns that is recognised today as the crest on the coat of arms of the City of Nottingham in England. It is an ancient symbol whose original meaning has been largely lost over time. It is most commonly assumed that the cross staff represents the woods that used to define the local area (such as Sherwood forest) and that the crowns are a reference to the royal use of these woods for hunting. The symbol is set upon a red/maroon shield and so this is these are most accurate colours of shirt to choose if you intend to specifically represent Nottingham.

Smiting eagle, Double headed eagle slaying serpent (White line) Tapestry

Description: The two headed eagle in European tradition has long been associated with divine terrestrial authority, having been increasingly viewed as symbol of the Roman Empire in the late classical and early medieval periods. In in the west the symbol would come to adorn the flags of the Holy Roman Empire while in the east it endured on the banners of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. The image of the snake on the other is more commonly associated with deception, danger and even the devil himself. The design depicts the eagle defeating the serpent in a manner which invokes the early Christian symbol of the Ichthys (Fish) and simultaneously resembles a saintly Halo.
