The Dumfries and Galloway coast is not a popular place to visit, but it ought to be. Some of the coastline is truly stunning, and none more so than the beach at Sandy Hills, where the tide retreats to the distant horizon, leaving the patchy wet sand to reflect the sky. I've painted this 30 x 20 inches oil painting based on two pictures I took whilst walking the cliff in early March 2017.

Rockcliffe bay, a hidden gem of a place, located on the southern end of the Dumfries and Galloway coastline, Scotland. Fantastic scenery all around, a beautiful place to visit all year round. Rough island is a few hundred metres away, accessed by a tidal causeway. Canon 5D mk3 24-105 L lens

Ardwell Church or Kirk, on the South Rhins, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, UK.

Southerness Lighthouse Number of views as of 19th May 2018 = 1030. Southerness Point is on the Solway Firth, 15 miles south of Dumfries. Its unusual rectangular-walled lighthouse is apparently the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland. The lighthouse was built in 1748-49 to help guide ships up the River Nith estuary to Dumfries. Two rowing boats pulled up onto the shoreline of St Mary's Loch. The loch is the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders and is situated between Selkirk and Moffat in the beautiful Yarrow valley.

Rockcliffe is one of a number of small seaside villages along the stretch of the north shore of the Solway Firth known as the Colvend Coast. From the bay, two islands are visible offshore. The more distant is Hestan Island, complete with its lighthouse and cottages. Closer in, a third of a mile from Rockcliffe, is Rough Island. This is accessible on foot at low tide, either via a causeway of sorts from the north, or directly across the sand from Rockcliffe. Canon 5D MKiii 24-105 L-series lens

A lovely country drive through a stunning valley from Moffat to St Mary's Loch on the border between Dumfries and Galloway and The Scottish Borders. The area is the watershed of Scotland, with the water to the west draining away to eventually end up in the Atlantic and the water to the east ending in the North Sea. beautiful but very busy in the summer months, but in the quieter winter months it is winding road through stunning countryside. Kippford is a village on the Solway Coast and lies just three miles from Dalbeattie. Kippford is an unusually narrow village on the shore of the estuary of the River Urr and is popular with yachtsmen. It is a charming waterside location and from Kippford you can take a stroll on the Jubilee footpath to the pretty village of Rockcliffe.
