I am a citizen of a dystopian society in the year 1984. I live in a world where freedom of thought and expression is suppressed by a totalitarian government. I am constantly monitored by the government and am expected to conform to its strict rules and regulations. I am constantly under the watchful eye of Big Brother and am expected to follow the Party's doctrine without question. I live in a world of fear, mistrust, and paranoia, where the government controls every aspect of my life.

A birthday is the anniversary of the birth of a person or figuratively of an institution. Birthdays of people are celebrated in numerous cultures, often with birthday gifts, birthday cards, a birthday party or a rite of passage. This design is one of 80 different birth years, together with the age of that specific birth year during 2020. The film centres on Sam Lowry, a low ranking bureaucrat trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living in a small apartment, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil's satire of bureaucratic, technocratic, terrorism, and an hyper-surveillance, state capitalist like totalitarian government is reminiscent of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and has been called Kafkaesque and absurdist.
