According to Greek Mythology, the Amazons were a tribe of entirely female warriors. It was believed that the Amazons lived in Themiscyra near the Black Sea. The Amazons were famous for being all women and for hating men. No men were allowed to live alongside the Amazons. They were an entirely female tribe. So much that they would only keep the daughters that they gave birth to. The Amazons mostly fought using spears, and bows and arrows. It is the Goulburn River near Seymour, and I did this as a demonstration piece for Artist's Palette magazine. Pastel on Mi-Teinte 'Tex' paper (blue) - 50cm x 35cm This painting depicts the landscape looking across to the Tallarook Ranges from the area known as Dysart, an Agricultural area close to Seymour. Last week I hung this in the Old Courthouse Gallery, Seymour, to replace a painting that had sold. I found out yesterday (15/9/12) that this one has sold too! The Howqua River runs through the area known as the High Country which is in the Mansfield area of Northern Victoria. I did this painting (and a few others) during a camping trip a couple of years ago. The time of day here is late afternoon/early evening. It is symbolic of the Aussie spirit and the knowledge that the bush, and the people who dwell in the beauty of the Australian bush, will regenerate! Pastel on Colourfix paper (burgundy) - 70cm x 50cm In this country (Australia) the trees lose their bark instead of their leaves! Weird eh? As the bark peels away it reveals beautiful patterns and exposes amazing colours in the trunks of many varieties of eucalypt. This is a Red Gum. I found this beautiful tree during a trip to the Howqua River, which is near Mansfield, Northern Victoria (a mountainous area known as the High Country) when my husband took me on a hair raising 4-wheel drive excursion into the bush! The smell of freshly mown hay is in the air and beautiful rolls of hay are to be seen everywhere, ready for storage as summer stockfeed. I completed this painting last weekend (29/11/09) and was pleased with the way it turned out. Pastel on Colourfix paper (burgundy) - 50cm x 35cm _(1315 views July 2011)_ This is a 'labour of love' (although it wasn't really a labour)! I finished it last weekend. It is for my mum and she is giving it to someone as a wedding present, so I have to work out a way to get it to the U.K. without it falling to pieces on the way!!!! Any bright ideas??? My latest cunning plan is to frame it under perspex. The wattle trees are blooming at the moment, although the blossom is almost passed it's best. A sign that spring is on the way.
