A view of South Queensferry, the town where I live. Formerly in the county of West Lothian, South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the ‘Queens Ferry’ for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews. A ferry service operated until 1964, the year the Forth Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry was created a burgh of regality in the 13th century and made a Royal Burgh in 1636. It traded actively with Europe in the 17th century. A small section of the crowd at the 2006 annual Loony Dook in South Queensferry, Scotland. The water, as always, was freezing cold (it is a tributary of the North Sea after all). MORE than 3,000 people turned out to watch a record number of people take part in the annual Loony Dook fund raising spectacle in South Queensferry on New Years' Day. Residents and tourists descended on the town's High Street area well in advance of the mid-day dip to ensure they had a good vantage point. And they were not disappointed. More than 400 hardy (if rather mad) souls took to the water, well ahead of the previous peak of 300-plus. Related shots can be found at: South Queensferry. Best viewed LARGER.

This is the RNLI Inflatable lifeboat operating out of South Queensferry, Scotland. The Atlantic 85 is a rigid inflatable lifeboat, introduced in the latter half of 2005. It has a manually operated self-righting mechanism and is capable of being beached in an emergency without sustaining damage to engines or steering gear. The Atlantic 85 is fitted with radar and VHF direction finding equipment and can be operated safely in daylight in a force 6/7 and at night in a force 5/6. Best viewed Larger.

One of the pair of Sphinx like sculptures flanking the main drive up to Hopetoun House, one of the most splendid examples of Georgian architecture in Britain. Hopetoun House is the traditional residence of the Earl of Hopetoun (the Marquess of Linlithgow). It was built in 1699 and was designed by William Bruce, and extended in 1721 by William Adam. The house is located near South Queensferry to the west of Edinburgh, Scotland. Set in 150 acres of rolling parkland with extensive woodland walks, breathtaking vistas over the River Forth and a deer park, the magnificent interiors boast fine paintings, original furnishings and décor, tapestries and objects d’art with Aubusson tapestries and fabulous chandeliers in the Ballroom.

This was today's (17 February 09) sunset over South Queensferry, Edinburgh, Scotland. I was on the train coming home from work and I could see this amazing sunset, infact everone on the train was staring out of the window. The way I figured it, sunsets are usually pretty quick, so I expected the light show to be over by the time I reached the station. However, I got lucky and I had a few minutes to take a few shots. This is the result, straight from the camera, no enhancements at all. I did not have my DSLR with me, so this shot was taken with my new point and shoot camera (Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS).

We had a photography day out in South Queensferry, Scotland today. The weather was glorious, the company was excellent and it was a great day out. A colourful sunrise at South Queensferry looking onto the Forth Bridge as the light of dawn floods across the river Forth. The tide height on this occasion made the rocks in the foreground look like a hand reaching out to the bridge.

The bell tower, or belfry on Abercorn Church near South Queensferry, Scotland. A free standing bell tower may be referred to by its Italian name, campanile. Note that in this case, there is only one bell and it is rung from outside the church. Abercorn Parish Church is a remarkable place. But even though a small part of it can be dated back to the 1100s, what you can see today is only part of the story. There are clues to an even longer history in the collection of stones on view in the Abercorn Museum, just inside the churchyard gates. The bridge was opened in 1890 at a cost of £2.5m and 57 fatalities among the construction crew (it is now believed that the actual death toll is likely to have been closer to 80). A pretty row of cottages on the edge of the Hopetoun Estate, near South Queensferry, Scotland. The houses were built in 1881. Situated just outside Edinburgh, the estate is comprised of 150 acres of rolling parkland with extensive woodland walks, breathtaking views on the River Forth and a deer park.
