He was educated under Augustus Saint Gaudens at Cooper Union and worked in the Studio of Philip Martiny from 1888-1891. He was a member of the New York Artist League from 1894 - 1898. The years 1891 - 1893 are unaccounted for. (Speculation allows that he came to Chicago with many of his student colleagues to work on the World's Columbian Exposition.) After his return to America in 1913, he took a job as head of the sculpture department at the Art Institute in Chicago.
