He was educated under Augustus Saint Gaudens at Cooper Union and worked in the Studio of Philip Martiny from 1888-1891. He was a member of the New York Artist League from 1894 - 1898. The years 1891 - 1893 are unaccounted for. (Speculation allows that he came to Chicago with many of his student colleagues to work on the World's Columbian Exposition.) Hering studied in Paris from 1898 - 1901 at the Colarossi Academy and the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
