I Love Ham

A boat of sightseeers heading across the Douro River in the city of Porto (or Oporto). This city, the second largest in Portugtal, lies on its north west coast at the point where the Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean. Across the river here are the warehouses and offices of the port wine companies - well worth a visit! The centre of the city has, since 1996 been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This image has been processed to give a coloured pencil finish.

The small town of Velez Blanco in the Almeria province of Anadalucia, Spain. Above the town is the fine Renaissance castle built by the Marquises of Velez Blanco in the early 16th century as an extension to the Moorish alcazaba. The castle is now just a shell as the Dukes of Medina sold the interior to an antiques dealer in 1904. The courtyard is now in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Iberia

The hilltop town of Mojacar in Andalucia, Spain is situated on the Mediterranian coast. The town lies about 2 Km from the beach area, Mojacar Playa. Although largely modern now, the town has a very long and distinguished history and gained importance as a Moorish stronghold on the frontier with Christian Spain. Over the years the population moved away, largely due to extended droughts but more recently Mojacar became home to artists and is now a thriving holiday destination. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200

Building by the Moorish rulers began in 1238 on a rocky outcrop of the Sierra Nevada. Later it was to become the home of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and their daughter Katherine of Aragon - soon to be the wife of Arthur Tudor and then King Henry VIII following Arthur's death. A view looking over the Alhambra Palace in Grenada, Spain. This magnificent collection of Moorish buildings started life around the 9th century as a fortress or alcazar combined with a medina or city. It seems to have become a royal palace sometime in the 13th century. The Moors ruled Granada until conquered by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492 and it was here that Princess Katherine of Aragon lived until her marriage to Prince Arthur of England and on his death, King Henry VIII.

Sefarad is a Hebrew term that refers to the Iberian Peninsula, specifically Spain and Portugal. It is also used to describe the Jewish communities that lived in these regions during the Middle Ages and early modern period. The term is derived from the Hebrew word for Spain, which is Sepharad. Sefarad has a rich cultural and historical significance in Jewish history, as it was home to a vibrant Jewish community that produced important works of literature, philosophy, and science. The Jewish presence in Sefarad came to an end with the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 and Portugal in 1497.
