CHiPs is an American crime drama television series created by Rick Rosner, that originally aired on NBC from September 15, 1977 to May 1, 1983. It followed the lives of two motorcycle officers of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The series ran for 139 episodes over six seasons, plus one reunion TV movie in October 1998.

The Catalina Grand Prix was one of the biggest races In the country at the time. It was a 100-mile event held on Santa Catalina Island of the coast of Los Angeles. The 10-mile course was a mixture of road, dirt fire trails, singletrack, and even went through a golf course. Cycle Magazine noted that many of the big AMA national riders skipped Catalina so as not to suffer embarrassment at the hands of Southern California scramble riders who were known to dominate the event.

The 600-acre park had a larger purpose which was to play host to Hollywood studios as a versatile backdrop for all kinds of film and television projects, including what would be the Dukes of Hazzard's most death-defying jump of all time. Of course, most folks remember it as the place to head out with your buddies to ride dirt bikes and dune buggies, or even to take in organized motocross racing events.

Episodes utilized a standard hour-long time slot, which at the time required 48 minutes of actual programming. Over-the-top freeway pileups and vehicular stunts including jumping from moving motorcycles to runaway cars were signatures of the show. As real-life CHP motor officers rarely ride in pairs, in early episodes this was explained away by placing the trouble-prone Ponch on probationary status, with Jon assigned as his field training officer.

Founded in 1969, California Cycle Works was a manufacturer of custom motorcycle parts and a premier builder of NorCal style choppers and wild customs. Based in Sacramento, California, CCW was on the front end of the chopper craze, and produced a full catalog of custom parts ranging from custom frames to raked chopper forks and continued doing their thing well into the mid '80s.

On June 22, 1975, the world's top motocross riders converged on Carlsbad, California for the 500cc United States Grand Prix. This was the 6th round of the Motocross World Championships and a rematch of the previous season where, once again, the two top competitors in the chase for the cup.

Already an accomplished artist, Jeff McCann began customizing motorcycles in the mid-60s and soon found himself with a steady side-gig painting and customizing friend’s bikes. Realizing the potential to build custom choppers for a living, Jeff partnered with his friend Chris, settled on the name CJ Custom Cycle Parts, and opened their new business venture together in 1970. With a mix of their own house designed parts and inventory goodies, CJ had everything an early 70's biker could want to customize their bike and for those wanting to go all the way, the shop also offered complete custom-builds, either using a customer provided donor bike or as a built to order turn-key chopper based on brand-new motorcycles right off the showroom floor.
