The Peregrine Falcon

My favourite part of my visit to Svolvær was my wander along Svinøya Island, where I saw (and smelled) plenty of stockfish racks, talked to locals out walking their dogs, and saw amazing scenes like this one. It was interesting how I could take multiple photos from the same spot and get some with perfect blue water and others where the water colour was hardly evident at all because of the strong reflections. As for the goat in the title? The bit of rock sticking up out of the mountains near the middle of the shot is the Svolværgeita, or the 'goat of Svolvær.'

A rainbow appears over lupins blooming on Lake Tekapo's shore. A great way to end a bit of a rainy day.

On Tuesday morning, I was lucky enough to make it to the Moraine Lake Road entrance just after the road was opened for the season. I arrived at the lake to find I was only the third car parked in the parking lot! It was fantastic exploring around the Rockpile in the wintry conditions, and it proved that Moraine Lake is well worth visiting even when the water isn't shining brightly blue like it does later in the summer!

Marble Canyon is one of my favourite spots in the Rockies. It's not far from Banff but feels like it is a world away from the tour buses and crowds you'll often find there. Plus, every time I visited this summer it was different: the water levels started high and gradually tapered off (as expected), but for a few weeks in late August and early September, the water turned glacier-silt-grey before turning back to the deep aquamarine colour it had been previously. I'm still not entirely sure why!

The vivid colors of Norway and the Arctic Circle. The houses really pop against the otherwise white landscape.

A classic ford pickup truck's front end protrudes from it's resting place, illuminating the front end quite nicely.

This is a standard 3 exposure HDR that i took just after sunset. I combined the pictures in photomatix and brought the HDR for further processing in photoshop CS5. I used topaz adjust for some work with the tones as well as nik effex. This was taken on a beach in Encinitas, California. You can view all my photos on my website at www.jswolfphotography.com

A perfect sky, a lake with a tree-lined shore, and a red cottage. That says Finland to me. All it needs to complete the perfect Finnish scene is a sauna!

Thick mist hanging across the path to Kleiner Traithen. It gave the whole track an eerie feel, with the reds and yellows of autumn foliage framing it perfectly.

This wasn't the usual tree that people took photos off at Wellington Point, but we didn't have much choice once the tide came in...if we'd stayed out near "the tree" for much longer we would have ended up stranded! The glow in the background is from the Pinkenba/Brisbane Airport area.

A tiny set of cascades downstream of Serenity Falls in Buderim, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

The cliffs at Duncansby Head, only a few miles away from John O'Groats in Scotland's far northeast, towering over the sea below. They were a great introduction to the sort of landscapes we were saw in Orkney after our short ferry crossing to the islands later that day!
