The poster is a commercial advertising lithograph for the ‘Bethlehem’ confectionary, referring to a shop where sweets are made or sold. Lithography by Monzon, Jerusalem. Shalom Aharoni, born in 1908 in Rehovot, Israel, was a professional sculptor. He sculpted in stone, clay, and marble. This is Shalom Aharoni’s single recorded commercial poster. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.
Description: Poster promoting the first Maccabiah (Maccabee Games) held in Tel Aviv, Eretz Israel, March 28 - April 6, 1932. Published by Maccabi World Union. Public domain, via PPPA. The poster’s style is early 1930s commercial/promotional, with a simplified figure, strong flat color fields, and the Star of David flag. The 1932 Maccabiah was created to promote physical education and Jewish heritage. The games were similar to the Olympics. There were competitions in 16 sports, and 390 athletes from 27 countries participated. 20,000 spectators were at the opening ceremony. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.
