This illustration was inspired by the Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. They are nocturnal and during the day they rest in tree hollows. Multiple squirrels can be found grouped together on a single tree.

The Ainu are an ethnic group of related indigenous peoples native to northern Japan. Their ceremonial robes are decorated with beautiful geometrical patterns. They believed that these patterns warded off evil spirits, and protected the wearer. My illustration was inspired by their traditional crane dance.

The cecropia moth is North America's largest native moth. Moths use light from the moon to find their way in the dark of night so I gave mine a glowing flower to use as a guide.
