Description: Scarabeus Dung is inspired by dung beetles. Dung beetles are beetles that feed on feces. They are well known for their dung-rolling behavior revered by Ancient Egyptians as Khepri rolling the sun across the sky. Some of the ball-rolling species are nocturnal. For them, a 2003 study revealed that guiding light can ripple from the moon and even the Milky Way.

Description: Magical Totem Pole is an illustration inspired by Indigenous Totem Poles found in western Canada and the northwestern United States.

Description: Sakura Mantis is inspired by the anatomy of the orchid mantis and the cherry blossom. Orchid mantis is one of several species known as flower mantis, a reference to their unique physical form and behaviour, which often involves moving with a “swaying” motion, as if being “blown” in the breeze. In Japanese culture, the falling petals of the cherry blossom symbolize transience, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life.

Description: African Moon Moth is a nocturnal silk moth species. They do not have a mouth but they for sure have a lot of eyes :) Their beautiful wing patterns and tails remind me of a dancing ballerina.

Description: Feather-horned Beetles are very mysterious. None have been studied well so little is known about their life cycle or habits. Mine is howling at the moon. I don't believe it is supposed to do that. So mysterious.

Description: This illustration was inspired by the Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. They are nocturnal and during the day they rest in tree hollows. Multiple squirrels can be found grouped together on a single tree.

Description: The Ainu are an ethnic group of related indigenous peoples native to northern Japan. Their ceremonial robes are decorated with beautiful geometrical patterns. They believed that these patterns warded off evil spirits, and protected the wearer. My illustration was inspired by their traditional crane dance.

Description: I've always found it fascinating how bats sleep upside down. With a supernatural transformation, they can become even more menacing than they appear while flying.

Description: The Glass Octopus is nearly transparent, very rarely encountered and the few information scientists have managed to gather comes from specimens found in stomachs of predators. The inside of its head reminds me of the complexity and depth of the universe.

Description: The cecropia moth is North America's largest native moth. Moths use light from the moon to find their way in the dark of night so I gave mine a glowing flower to use as a guide.
