Description: Situated only ten miles due east of Haverhill, the small village of Foxearth is close to the County boundary between Essex and Suffolk. In the centre of the village once stood an imposing group of buildings which formed the Ward’s Brewery of Foxearth. Founded in 1848 by George Ward, the business was soon to be run by his wife, Mrs Charlotte Ward, on the early death of George. His son David joined his mother until the 1880s, when he took control on his own until his death at the grand age of 90 in 1949. The mantle of ownership was passed down to his son, Mr Harold Ewart Ward, who was the second Chairman and Managing Director. In 1953 he in turn passed on the reins to his son, the last acting Head Brewer, Managing Director and Chairman.

With failure looming, Harvard executives added the beer back into their near-beer . Profits came back, and so did federal agents, culminating in August of 1925 when a truck filled with 100 barrels of illegal Harvard beer was hijacked in Lowell.

Description: In 1975, the Campaign for Real Ale invented the modern beer festival when it staged a five-day event with more than 50 beers attended by 40,000 thirsty members. Forty years on, we asked those who were there – volunteers, Campaign leaders and drinkers – to share their memories. Chris Bruton (organiser): A Cambridge branch member suggested a beer festival in the Corn Exchange at an early meeting in 1974. The main credit should go to the late Alan Hill – then a Personnel Manager at Pye in Cambridge. The festival made a significant profit, and the donation to central funds was essential to keep the Campaign afloat during a difficult period.
