The constellations are shown as though they are looking down on the earth from beyond the stars, many of the figures are drawn with their backs turned. In Greek mythology, Auriga is often identified as the mythological Greek hero Erichthonius of Athens, the chthonic son of Hephaestus who was raised by the goddess Athena. Vintage illustration astronomy and antique celestial star chart featuring the constellations of Bootes, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices and Quadrans Muralis. Bootes means, herdsman, plowman or ox driver. Canes Venatici means 'hunting dogs' and they belong to Boötes. Coma Berenices means 'Berenice's Hair' and refers to Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who sacrificed her long hair as a votive offering. Quadrans Muralis is a navigational tool used to calculate various readings, such as longitude, latitude, and time of day.
