Description: Cuchara is a charming, mountain village tucked away on the scenic byway 12 aka The Highway of Legends. There’s a quaint, one short street downtown area, consisting of several colorful shops, some lodging and a couple of restaurants. The town was established in 1883 and is at an elevation of 8,650 feet, situated on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in south-central Colorado. Cucharas Pass, at almost 10,000 feet, is just a few miles south of the town. The town is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest where my husband and I have traveled and explored numerous scenic forest service roads in the area. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Galleries/Collections: "Colorado" "Signs" 20210915-D...
Description: This litle Carolina Chickadee was singing beautifully deep in the trees. I followed its sounds until it appeared to be closer. At first I didn't see it until I looked straight up high in the treetop. Captured at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge along the Eagle Roost trail located in northern Oklahoma. Description: Abandoned in New Mexico Near Capulin Volcano by Debra Martz I was traveling west on highway 87 in New Mexico, when I saw these abandoned buildings and windmill. The rising mountain in the background is Capulin Volcano National Monument. You can see the road cut into the side which winds to the other side to the top. There is a trail at the top with views of portions of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collections: "New Mexico" "Digital Art Photography" 202220210906-2021-09-06-IMG_5326 Converted my original photograph to black and white and added several textures for the finish.
Description: When I stepped into the second room of the old train Depot museum at Uptop, Colorado, this vintage pitcher and basin in the window caught my attention. Description: Young White Ibis Feeding in the Grass by Martz There was a family of Ibis feeding on insects in this grassy area located near the Intracoastal waterway in Port A, Texas. There were the all white adults, a few immatures and juveniles. This one more in the juvenile plumage stage soon to start getting more splotches of white as it moves to the immature plumage stage in the summer. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends 3" 202220190417-DSC_4898.NEF

Description: I was at the Brazos Summit in the San Juan Mountain range of northern New Mexico taking in the expansive views when my eyes moved to all the wildflowers. I walked over to get some close up shots of the flowers when I spotted this black and white moth. The first IDs generated by Google were that of a "Wild Forget-Me-Not Moth" but the range was wrong. Further searching with iNaturalist came up with the Police Car Moth and in the correct range. aka Gnophaela vertimculata ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: 20210719-DSC_4207
Description: Leisurely Day at Bear Lake - Colorado by Debra Martz This was the second beautiful mountain lake we discovered on FSR 422. As we hiked around the lake it appeared to be a wonderful place to come and relax in each person's own way. There were several fishing, one reading and later a few kayakers launched their boats. FSR 422 is about 12 miles south of La Veta, Colorado on Hwy 12. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Galleries/Collection: "Colorado" 20210915-DSC_4946.NEF
Description: When I made my first visit to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in northern Oklahoma I didn't expect my first stop for photography would be an abandoned house and windmill with nature taking it back. But shortly after turning off hwy 38 onto the gravel road leading into the refuge, this scene captured my attention so had to stop. I marveled at what a beautiful home this had been in its day and wondered why it was left to deteriorate. Now, I feel the need to stop every time to see if I can capture it differently. This morning was just about a hour after sunrise and still had a lovely glow from the early morning sunshine. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20221020-DSC_7744-HDR.dng
Description: Old Faithful Yellowstone by Debra Martz This famous geyser in Yellowstone was named for its frequent and rather predictable eruptions. Description: Bee Fly on Aspen Fleabane by Debra Martz It seems I was starting to notice the little things as we made our way down the Vista Point trail back to the Cordova Pass area. There are a number of species of bee flies; this possibly the exoprosopa decora in the familiy Bombyliidae. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collections: "Flora" "Wildflowers" 20210916-DSC_5046
Description: I discovered this old green abandoned house when I first moved to northern Oklahoma in 2019. Something about it has me taking photos each and every time I’m in the area. It’s the same yet always different as time and seasons go by. It looked beautiful to me on this day surrounded by sunflowers and beautiful clouds in the sky! ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20210929-IMG_6922-Edit.tif
Description: We were strolling the main street through Red River, NM admiring all the flowers. Flowers seem to love the mountain air, growing tall and beautiful! The little bee seemed to be enjoying the flowers, also, but took flight just as I took this shot. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collections: "Flora" "Digital Art Photography" 20210819-2021-08-19-IMG_4895
Description: Hiking Trail in Santa Ana NWR by Debra Martz I love hiking and walking the trails at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in south Texas. And this area is my very favorite with the beautiful Spanish Moss draping from the trees! ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20220412-IMG_9594
Description: Pops 66 Station by Debra Martz Travel along route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma and you will find a 66 foot tall soda structure weighing in at 4 tons. The stop includes over 600 varieties of soda displayed on a glass wall, a restaurant, gas station and curio shop. This image is a partial section of the glass wall where the sodas are displayed as seen from the outside. Maybe some day I will pass by when it is lit at night in multi-colored neon. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20200602-DSC_0552-Edit-Enhanced.dng
Description: I love northern New Mexico and traveling U.S.64 scenic byway over the San Juan Mountains of the Rockies is a favorite. This section is between U.S. 84 at Tierra Amarilla (7529') and U.S. 285 at Tres Piedras (8081') reaching a maximum altitude of 10,507 feet. I always take advantage of the many pullouts for scenic views! ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Galleries/Collection: " New Mexico" 20210719-DSC_4198-Pano-Edit.tif

Description: The water was not moving, it was all frozen in place. Waterfowl looking for open water of which there was a small area back by the spillway on both sides. The birds in flight are mostly Common Mergansers, Northern Pintails and a few seagulls. February was brutally cold with several weeks below freezing dipping as low as -14. Once the weather and roads improved I made the drive to the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma for a bird watching day. I had a better day than anticipated, seeing 41 different species even with the majority of the lake frozen. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends2" 20210223-DSC_4307.NEF
Description: It was a rather slow day of bird watching and those we saw were at a distance so I turned to some landscape photography. Description: After two weeks of below freezing weather, I was surprised to see the American White Pelicans at the Great Salt Plains Lake. I had previously been made aware that there were some resident ones that did not migrate but I really thought they might have headed somewhere else. Most of the lake was still frozen, so they were all in the only area that had thawed. They were already showing signs of breeding season with the yellow plate which forms on the top of the bills of breeding adults. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Galleries/Collections "Feathered Friends2" "Digital Art" 20210223-DSC_4153-Edit.tif
Description: The snow had been falling for a number of days so we had many birds coming to the backyard for food and warm water that we kept heated. This little American Goldfinch left the large groups on the feeders and it appeared it was just ready for a nap! Description: The month of February was brutal with temperatures well below freezing and 3 snow storms. The weather and road conditions left me with the only bird watching to be that in my backyard. And I had plenty as we kept 8 feeders filled daily and heated water for drinking. Description: This was one very busy Roadrunner, running back and forth chasing and catching insects. Most every time we visit this state park, we see Greater Roadrunners yet Cornell Lab Merlin app lists them as uncommon. Greater Roadrunners are large cuckoos and also known by the name of Chaparral and scientific name Geococcyx californianus Captured at the Great Salt Plainis State Park in Northern Oklahoma ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection "Feathered Friends 2" 20210203-DSC_3403-Edit.tif
Description: There are several reasons birds fluff their feathers but in the very cold weather it is a way to help stay warm. Fluffing their feathers allows them to trap warm air from body heat; the more trapped air, the warmer the bird. This Dark-eyed Junco extremely fluffy so I imagine it is quite warm. Digital modifications applied for a painterly artwork. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20210210-DSC_3674-Edit.tif
Description: When seen at a distance, they appear black but close up and with the sun shining on them they are beautiful. And though they may be beautiful, they can be a pest, especially when they arrive at backyard feeders in large groups. They are not native to the USA but they are the most abundant of all songbirds with a range from Alaska to Mexico. 100 birds were set free in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. Unbelievable that now there are more than 200 million European Starlings! ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends2" 20210215-72D_3941-Edit.tif
Description: While the snow on the branches is gone the temps are brutal getting below zero at night. One method for birds to stay warm is to fluff their feathers to hold in warm air. We have supplied steady food and water during this crazy, cold winter system and at some points as many as 60-70 of these American Goldfinches have been present. They come and go all day; daylight until dark. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends2" 20210213-DSC_3715.NEF
Description: It has been a very cold winter in northern Oklahoma and much of the USA this year. This American Goldfinch is a bright and cheerful addition to the white snow covered branches. Description: This portion of the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River in Oklahoma is just below the spillway of the Great Salt Plains Lake. The upper portion of this image is the Riverroad Campground where we like to spend time especially during Spring and Fall bird migration. Was odd to see the campground completely empty on this January day as there are usually at least a few campers even when not the best weather. On the lower bank of good ol' Oklahoma red dirt are 3 American White Pelicans and a lone Great Blue Heron reflecting in the water. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20210121-DSC_3072.NEF
