Description: Another thermal pool along the boardwalk in the Midway Geyser Basin is Opal Pool. . Though usually active as a hot spring, approximate temperature of 132 °F (56 °C), Opal Pool is considered a fountain-type geyser though eruptions are infrequent. The first recorded eruption of Opal Pool was in 1947 and it occurred infrequently until they stopped in 1953. The eruptions reemerged in 1979 erupting without much warning. A fact I found interesting: In 2005 Opal completely drained, but refilled as a vivid blue-green pool in 2008. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collections: "U S National Park" 202220140908-DSC_4860-Edit.tif
Description: Miniature Forests on the Edge of Grand Prismatic Spring by Debra Martz Within the rainbow of orange, brown and red colors, some microorganisms live in communities of thick mats. Like a miniature forest, there are microbes that live on or near the top, similar to a forest canopy, using sunlight to perform photosynthesis to fuel the community. Organisms living deeper in the mat, similar to a forest understory, derive energy from the chemicals produced by the surface microbes. Just like a forest's counterparts, all of these organisms create an ecosystem in the expanse of a few inches depth. Description: Excelsior Runoff to Firehole River Yellowstone Wyoming When entering the Midway Geyser Basin you cross a walking bridge over Firehole River where you can already "see the heat" of Excelsior Geysor. "The Firehole River starts and ends in Yellowstone National Park. It flows through many hydrothermal areas: Lone Star Geyser Basin, Upper Geyser Basin, Midway Geyser Basin, and the Lower Geyser Basin. Because of this, it receives geothermally heated water, which means this river is warmer than many other rivers in the park." info from https://www.nps.gov/places/000/firehole-river.htm ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collections: "U.S. National Park" 202220140908-DSC_4842-EN

Description: Rising Moon and Silhouettes by Debra Martz I've been standing in a bird blind for 30-40 minutes waiting on daylight and it is freezing cold on this December morning! But it's now 7:11am and sunrise is at 7:25. Starting to see the silhouettes of a few birds as they begin to fly during the dawn of this new day. It is fall migration time and thousands of cranes, geese, ducks and many other shore birds can be heard out on the bay! ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20211202-DSC_9458.NEF Image captured from the bird blind at Sand Bay Cove which is located along the Eagle Roost Trail in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in northern Oklahoma.
Description: Excelsior Geyser Crater Yellowstone Wyoming by Debra Martz After crossing the Firehole River bridge, a brief climb on the connecting boardwalk soon reveals the source of the massive amounts of steam. It is the Excelsior Geyser Crater which releases 4000-5000 gallons of water per minute into the Firehole River. Though now dormant, in the late 19th century it was the largest geyser in the world with bursts up to 300 feet in height. All of the wild activity seemed to have blown itself apart creating a crater. After 1901 there was only one more eruption; it was in 1985 and lasted two days. Excelsior is now considered more of a hot spring with temperature of approximately 199° F. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Co...

Description: Boardwalk to the Grand Prismatic Yellowstone Wyoming Midway Geyser Basin contains a small collection of mammoth-sized springs. Midway is actually part of the Lower Geyser Basin but because of its isolated location between the main features of Lower and Upper geyser basins it became known as Midway. In 1889, Rudyard Kipling, who visited Yellowstone, referred to it as "Hell's Half Acre." Even today it is still remembered by that name. And though it is the smallest geyser basin, Midway possesses two of the largest hot springs in the world. Grand Prismatic Spring, nearly 370 feet in diameter, sits upon a large mound surrounded by small step-like terraces. The other feature, Excelsior Geyser, was once the largest geyser in the world before ...
Description: Seeing these gas station attendant caps was a huge throw back in time for me. I remember the attendants dressed in uniforms with button shirts, caps and some even wore bow-ties in the very early days! Not to mention they would check your oil, water levels and wash the windshield! But in these current days the majority of gas stations are self-service with the full service the exception rather than the rule in most USA states. While traveling through Oregon a few years back, we noticed there were no self-service stations and the same for New Jersey; customers are not allowed to fill their own tanks in these two states. The caps were just some of the gas memorabilia inside the Classical Gas Museum located in Embudo, NM. ©Deb...
