Description: Shorja Market was once the Jewish Quarter of Baghdad, before pogroms in 1950 and 1968 saw their eviction from the city and Iraq. During OIF several attacks against this "soft" target by insurgents killed dozens of innocent people.

Description: Named after Abu-Nawas, a classical Arabic poet, this street runs along the east bank of the Tigris River. The United States spent considerable money to try to improve the street and bring back businesses during the Insurgency.

Description: Kirkuk is an oil-rich city in the Iraqi northern area and there was a dispute as to whether it was to be part of the new state of Kurdistan. Kurds who had left the city during Saddam's efforts of "Arabization" were able to return.

Description: The al-Rusafi statue is another Baghdad landmark. Sitting near the Martyr Bridge, it commemorates the Poet of Freedom. Unfortunately, advocates of freedom have never had it very good in Iraq.

Description: The Mosque of Imam Musa al-Qadim is an important Shia shrine in Baghdad, a site important to Twelvers. As such, it was attacked several times by Sunni insurgents, including one suicide bombing conducted by a male insurgent wearing a dress.

Description: Fish are a big deal in Baghdad, or at least that's what I was told. With the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers meeting there I guess fish would definitely be on the menu. Unfortunately, never had a chance to dine at a local restaurant...

Description: al-Nabi Yunus Mosque, also known as the Grave of Jonah, was located in Mosul and was renovated by Saddam at one point. Jonah is a Biblical figure as well as an Islamic prophet. Unfortunately, ISIS decided it would be cool to destroy the site because, well, they're ISIS.

Description: Once a symbol of Mosul (it was part of a wall which protected the city from Persians, Ottomans. etc.) it was badly neglected after 2003 and badly damaged by ISIS.

Description: Begun in 1980, Tourist Island was an amusement park for Iraqis on the Tigris River north of Baghdad. Once the home of restaurants, a marina, an outdoor theater and an amphitheater, it was occupied by the Iraqi Army prior to the beginning of the Iraq War... which resulted in an ex-amusement park following the fighting.

Description: Legend has it that the monument to Iraq's "victory" over Iran was made out of the melted steel of Iranian army helmets. The arms holding the swords are supposedly copies of Saddam's arms... on a smaller scale, of course. In any case, definitely worth visiting while in the Green Zone!
