Description: Based on the radio drama Challenge of the Yukon, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon was a half-hour American action adventure TV series. Broadcasted in color on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. from September 29, 1955, to September 25, 1958, the show ran for 78 episodes over three seasons. The show followed Sergeant Preston of the North-West Mounted Police, who patrolled the Yukon Territory in search of renegades and outlaws, during the time of the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s. Preston was assisted by his Alaskan Malamute, Yukon King, who had been raised by wolves. At the end of each episode, Preston would turn to his dog and say, "Well, King, this case is closed."
Description: Semi-Tough is a 1977 American sports comedy film set in the world of American professional football. Semi-Tough follows the story of pro football friends Billy Clyde Puckett and Marvin "Shake" Tiller, who have a third roommate, Barbara Jane Bookman. A romance develops between Shake and Barbara Jane when he becomes self-confident after completing a self awareness course called "B.E.A.T.", at which point Billy Clyde slyly makes a play to win her for himself. The film received mixed receptions, with some reviewers praised its parodies, while others lamented the film's departure from the novel.
Description: Founded in 1976 as American Passage Marketing, Seattle FilmWorks (SFW) was a mail order photographic film processing company that sold re-spooled 35mm motion picture film. The film was loaded into 35mm film canisters for still photography use, and the company returned a new roll with each order. In the '80s, SFW aggressively marketed its products and services and offered two rolls of their film for US$2.00 though newspapers, magazines, and package inserts. At its peak in 1997, SFW employed approximately 800 people and processed about 20 miles of film a day in a 65,000 sq ft lab. One of SFW's innovations was digitizing customer photos and delivering them back to them via floppy disk, and later, through a website portal.
Description: Henry Schuster emigrated with his family from Germany to Wisconsin at the age of 12 in 1847. In 1862, he and his wife moved to Rochester, Minnesota where, working as a blacksmith, he made enough to buy an interest in the Joest Brewery. By 1866, he was working at Joest, which produced nearly 500 barrels a year, and in 1870, he bought out his partner, renaming it Union Brewery. A year later, the brewery burned down, and Schuster began construction on a new three-story plant, which included a single-story, solid brick structure housing the furnaces. The new brewery opened in 1871 as Schuster Brewing Co. and focused on both brewing traditional German beers and non-alcoholic malt and hop tonics that sold in drugstores as medicinal remedies.
Description: Schraderbräu is a homebrew beer lagered by DEA Agent Hank Schrader in Breaking Bad, which he says is "brewed to silky perfection." His home brew is a Märzen style beer that measures a 13 SRM, with 26 units of bitterness, and 6.2% alcohol by volume. We're first introduced to Schraderbräu in Season 2, Episode 13, "ABQ," as we find Hank bottling his latest batch in his garage. This is the day he called in sick after receiving a promotion to the El Paso Intelligence Center, which disappoints his wife, Marie.
Description: Schneider Motorradreparatur, or Schneider Motorcycle Repair in English, was a Stuttgart based garage specializing in high-performance motorcycle tuning and repair work. They provided parts and service for all makes and models during their 30-year run, though their specialty was café racers and all out track bikes. As an added bonus, if you couldn’t ride your bike in or were broken down somewhere, they would send out one of their two pickups to give you a lift.
Description: “Say Yes to Michigan” was a tourism campaign launched in January 1982 which saw an onslaught of TV, radio, and print advertisements, as well as T-shirts, buttons, and other promotional items. The slogan appeared on the official state map that same year, and a variation of the phrase came into play that was simply “Yes! Michigan.” A television commercial was created in 1986 to celebrate Michigan’s 150th birthday, that included a cheesy jingle called “Yes! Michigan — The Feeling is Forever.” The slogan reached almost cliché status throughout the '80s as it was used to sell everything from apples to automobiles, but the '90s saw the campaign wind down and fade away, eventually being replaced with “Great Lakes. Great Times.”
Description: One of the longest running ecological causes is probably that of the many campaigns to 'save the trees.' Whether it's trying to thwart developers from clearing land for new construction, fighting against clear-cut logging, or just trying to save one special tree from destruction, tree huggers come in all stripes and have one thing in common – a love for nature and magnificent trees.
Description: Saturday Night Special is a 1976 sexploitation crime film written by Joel Seigal, directed by Sam Bloch, and starring Georgette Jennings, Jamie Gillis, and Jeffrey Hurst. The story centers around a gang of crooks who botch a diamond heist by shooting the guards and taking hostages. Instead of making a run for it and going on the lam, they to head back to their hideout to blow off some steam with a few beautiful women. Anyway, I think you can see where this is going, and also understand how it landed an X rating, but nonetheless, the film is a must-see for cinephiles and fans of potent '70s cinema who are not easy to offend.
Description: Saturday Cat was the advertising mascot for Real Dairy Cream in the UK in the early '70s. While he isn't very well remembered today, he had about a decade long run that included print ads, TV spots, and store displays. But why is he called Saturday Cat? Well, the popular belief is that Saturday was when the milkman came around to collect payment and take orders for the coming week. Saturday Cat wears a milkman style cap, so we can only assume that he is kind of a walking, talking reminder to order up a bottle of real dairy cream, but the truth may just be lost to the sands of time.
Description: Santa Monica is a city in Los Angeles County, situated along Santa Monica Bay on California's South Coast. Santa Monica is a popular resort town, owing to its climate, beaches, and hospitality industry. It has a diverse economy, hosting headquarters of several companies in the entertainment industry. The Santa Monica Mountains that isolate San Fernando Valley to the north come all the way down to the ocean in Santa Monica, making for a striking visual, especially during sunrises and sunsets. This '60s era tourist design reflects an idyllic day at the beach in Santa Monica, 'where the mountains meet the sea.'
Description: Sanibel Island, Florida is located along the Gulf of Mexico, just a short drive from Fort Myers. While this tropical paradise justly famed for its sunsets, lighthouse, resorts, and sea shelling (it is known as the 'Seashell Capital of the World'), for about 30 years, there was another, slightly more unique attraction -The Sanibel Island Hippo Gardens. What started as a private estate with a couple of pet hippos in the '50s, ended up being somewhat of a roadside attraction with a dozen hippopotamus in the '60s. As the story goes, when the owners passed away, they left their estate to their only son, who eventually began operating somewhat of a private zoo amidst the property's extensive tropical gardens.
Description: Opened in July 1852, San Quentin is the oldest prison in California and the state's only death row for male inmates, the largest in the United States. It has a gas chamber, but since 1996, executions at the prison have been carried out by lethal injection, though the prison has not performed an execution since 2006. The prison has been featured on film, radio drama, video, podcast, and television; is the subject of many books; has hosted concerts; and has housed many notorious inmates. The correctional complex sits on Point San Quentin, which consists of 432 acres on the north side of San Francisco Bay. This souvenir style design features an etching of the earliest iteration of the prison, with Mt. Tamalpais standing in the background.
Description: 1967 was the Summer of Love, and San Francisco was the undisputed epicenter. 1968 saw a transition from 'peace, love, and dope' to a focus on social change. Don't worry, though, there was still plenty of peace, love, and dope. 1969 was the year people mobilized to make it happen, and yet again, San Francisco led the way. From the battle for People's Park and the Alcatraz occupation, to the Third World Liberation Front strike and countless antiwar protests, these and more largely student led happenings all took place in San Francisco in an attempt to change the world.
Description: The San Diego Sockers were a soccer team based in San Diego, California, that played from 1978 to 1996. The team played in the indoor and outdoor editions of the North American Soccer League (NASL) until 1984, as well as the original Major Indoor Soccer League and CISL. The Sockers are considered the most successful indoor soccer team. They made the playoffs in all but one of their 16 seasons of playing indoors. The franchise folded in 1996 and was the last surviving NASL franchise. This design is based on their 1980 logo that featured a scrappy cartoon soccer player ready to duke it out on the pitch.
Description: Formed in Sydney, Australia in 1985, Sadistik Exekution was an extreme metal band known for their outrageous live show antics, notorious behavior, non-conformist attitude, and their own extreme form of death metal. While the band has firmly stated they should not at all be confused with or labelled as black metal, they're ironically credited as being a key influence of early Scandinavian black metal bands. Sadistik Exekution released five albums and two singles, and called it quits in 1999.
Description: Sacred Mountain Trading Post opened in the late 1930s along Highway 89 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Operating as a gas station and convenience store serving travelers along the long highway as well as selling handcrafts from various tribes. The trading post takes its name from San Francisco Peaks located behind the property. Known as Sacred Mountain, these peaks have considerable religious significance to more than a dozen local American Indian tribes. The peaks are associated with the color yellow, and they are said to contain abalone inside, to be secured to the ground with a sunbeam, and to be covered with yellow clouds and evening twilight.
Description: S.O.B. or as they are frequently referred, to, SxOxB, (abbreviated from Sabotage Organized Barbarian) is a Japanese grindcore punk band formed in Osaka in 1983. They are considered hugely influential on grindcore bands and the genre of death metal, as well as one of the mainstays of the thrashcore genre.
Description: While the effects of the '80s 'war on drugs' are debatable, I think everyone will agree that the campaign messages and materials were pretty corny. That is certainly the case with this mid '80s 'Rule Out Drugs' example that shows a boy playing pirates and swinging a ruler. Say nope to dope, kids!
Description: Walter Schneider and his partner B.M. Alexander were pioneers West Hollywood, opening their successful bar, The Gallery Room, in 1962, and also ran the hot club of the day, Up Disco. In the late '70s, Schneider and Alexander decided they’d like to live in Venice, and a friend found them a prime location on Abbot Kinney Boulevard to open a new gay bar at the beach. Opening their doors in 1979 under the name Roosterfish, the bar quickly became a gay hot spot on the westside. Roosterfish became a neighborhood favorite, and operated for decades until finally closing up shop in 2016.
Description: A roller disco is a discotheque or skating rink where all the dancers wear roller skates. The music played is modern and easily danceable, historically disco but in the post disco era, almost any form of dance, pop or rock music was used. The roller disco concept originated as a fad in the '70s when the disco craze was at its height, peaking around 1980 and inspiring several roller-disco magazines. Roller disco experienced a mild revival in the early 2000s, where certain clubs began hosting roller disco nights. Just like with in other discos, special effects such as fog machines and flashing traffic lights are often used.
Description: On August 23, 1946, Rodney and Helen Graves opened their doors to the steak loving public of Williams, Arizona. Little did they know at the time that they were creating a main street institution that would not only become a Route 66 landmark, but carry on the old Arizona feel for decades. The Graves sold Rod's to a long time employee in 1985, and the new owner ensured the longtime favorite of locals and tourists alike remained just as they liked it. Rod's menu straight forward menu stayed largely the same over its 75-year run, something that few other restaurants can claim, and what customers counted on — a place where they could pull off the highway and have a really great steak.
Description: At the age of 15, Rocky Panzo and his family moved to Chicago from Italy in 1914. Rocky began working as a commercial perch fisherman to help support the family, and eventually opened his own bait shop. Located on Chicago's famous Navy Pier, long before it would be transformed into the polished tourist attraction it is today, Rocky's Bait Shop was a favorite of both commercial fishermen and amateur anglers alike. Rocky's relic of a shack at 138 N. Streeter Dr. sat amidst the ramshackle area that made up the water’s edge for decades, providing fresh bait and, as Rocky called it, questionable advice. Eventually, Rocky's sons joined up, adding a fried seafood trailer and changing the name to Rocky and Sons Fish House in the early '60s.
Description: Nelson Rockefeller secured the New York Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote on November 4, 1958. He went on to win reelection in 1962, 1966, and 1970. His final reelection campaign in 1970 leveraged the slogan "Rocky Puts It Together," and this hippie influenced design adorned buttons, posters, bumper stickers, and t-shirts. Rockefeller resigned from his duties as governor on December 18, 1973, and in 1975, was nominated by President Gerald R. Ford for the vice presidency of the United States, an office he held from December 19, 1975 to January 20, 1977. After leaving the White House, he retired from political life, returning to his philanthropic works. Rockefeller passed away on January 26, 1979.
Description: If you lived in the greater Seattle area in the mid to late '80s, then you probably remember seeing the occasional TV ad for a rock 'n roll hair salon called Rockutz. With an infectious heavy metal jingle that screamed “Rockutz… look like a staaaarrrrrrr!!!!,” it stuck with you, and if you ever decided that you (or your whole band) needed a new hair metal inspired hair do, then you knew that you needed to make the trip out to Rockutz so that you could look like a star.
Description: Uranus is one of two ice giants in the outer solar system (the other is Neptune). Most (80% or more) of the planet's mass is made up of a hot dense fluid of "icy" materials – water, methane, and ammonia – above a small rocky core. Near the core, it heats up to 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit (4,982 degrees Celsius). William Herschel tried unsuccessfully to name his discovery Georgium Sidus after King George III. Instead, the planet was named for Uranus, the Greek god of the sky, as suggested by Johann Bode. Regardless of how one pronounces Uranus, it's long been the punchline of many jokes, and this '60s era valentine inspired design is no exception... coming in hot!
Description: If you've been around the Southern California hot rod scene for a while, you're probably familiar with Rocket Muffler, the Burbank shop that spent several decades doing custom exhaust work for drag, dry lake, and street racers alike. Their business cards advertised "Racket by Rocket" which was probably a hint to the kind of work they did in squeezing out just a little more horsepower out of V8 engines in exchange for a little noise. In addition to sponsoring numerous local SoCal racers in the '50s and '60s, they also kept a sign out front of their shop on West Magnolia Boulevard offering free welding repairs on kid's toys, wagons, and bikes. Talk about community service!
Description: Without question, the '70s was the single most influential decade of rock music, as guitar driven tunes ruled the radio dial. While Rock n' roll didn't die, but the reign of rock did crumble as the airwaves of the '80s and '90s gave much larger shares to hip hop and new wave, but a large segment of the population continued to rock on!
Description: Riverside Speedway was a 1/4 mile dirt track built on top of an old landfill in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. The track opened in 1983, hosting regular racing events several nights a week and, after a full 20-year run, shut down in 2003. From midgets and outlaws to stocks and modifieds, racers from throughout Saskatchewan and beyond made countless memories tearing up the dirt at Riverside Speedway.
Description: Despite millions of people taking Ritalin, very few are aware that the drug had a mascot at one point. Meet Ritalin Man, an anthropomorphic potato looking fellow dreamed up in 1975 by the Ciba-Geigy Corporation to help market and promote their wonder drug, Ritalin. He appeared in doctor's offices and pharmacy's as a series of 7" plastic figurines in various incarnations ranging from gleeful and dancing, to depressed and confused. The idea was to help hyperactive and depressed young children relate to him more easily. With a hollow head and dilated pupils, Ritalin Man seems to be in a good place here, and a reminder of the good things that drugs can do for people.
