Description: Blue Crab by Debra Martz The World's Largest Blue Crab greats you as you arrive to the beach in Rockport, Texas. It sits on the waterfront, at the entrance to Rockport Beach Park, on the corner of Seabreeze Drive and E. Laurel St. Rockport had the World's Largest Blue Crab from the 1950s until the 1970s. The original big blue crab was made of paper mache and chicken wire and sat on the roof of a local crab cake restaurant. Battered by hurricanes, it was removed and buried in 1976 -- but Rockport never forgot it. In 2012 a new one was unveiled. The new Blue Crab sculpture is better built of aluminum and fiberglass , and even larger than the original. It took nine months to complete, and six days just to mount Big Blue on his new pylon...
Description: Green Heron by Debra Martz Bird watching in Port Aransas, Texas is always a delight for me...especially since I live within a 20 minute drive. I sometimes go looking for specific birds and other days, such as this one, just see what happens to show up where I'm birding. I wasn't expecting this Green H56eron to be close by the path I was walking so what a treat! A good birding day for sure!
Description: Mourning Dove on the Wire by Debra Martz Most everyone in the US has this bird but it was just sitting there so pretty with the split white and blue background I just had to get its picture! This was near the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas....just around the corner and across the street. I usually walk over to where there is a wetland area before leaving the birding center. Didn't see anything close until I headed back to my car and saw this dove. The mourning dove, Zenaida macroura, is the most abundant and widespread dove in the birds of north America.
Description: Axis Deer - Spotted Deer - Chital by Debra Martz I hate to admit that I shot this beautiful deer....with my zoom lens extended to 600mm on my camera and from the comfort of my camp chair. While their is a deer hunting season which includes the Axis, I only shoot with my camera. The Axis Deer was introduced to Texas in 1932. They are native to India where they are called Chital or Cheetal. They are also referred to as spotted deer. I captured this image and others of these beauties, on a summer day in South Llano River State Park near Junction, Texas. On one morning, a herd of aproximately 40 moved through this wooded area at our campsite. That was a wow moment!! Also, see my website www.debramartz.com
Description: Little Red Beauty - Vermilion Flycatcher by Debra Martz The title pretty much says it all. The Vermilion is a tiny bird, with the male having a showy crown, lower face, and underparts in brilliant scarlet or vermilion. They can be found in the far southern parts of the states of Texas west to California and through out much of Central and South America. This little beauty was in southern Texas at South Llano River State Park.
Description: Sundial Seashells by Debra Martz This is a macro image of part of my seashell collection. Living near the beach allows my to collected as often as I like. But here on the coast of South Texas shell collecting is much better during winter months. I'm not sure why; possibly a change in the currents bring in different varieties and many of them. Sundials, the spiralling one on the top, is always a favorite of mine to find. They are perfect just rinsed, dried and placed in a decorative dish (providing the snail is no longer inside). Great for coastal living decor.
Description: One Lone Flower Remains on the Cape Honeysuckle by Debra Martz The cape honeysuckle starts blooming in the fall, and us here in south Texas it continues all through winter and into Spring. This was the final bloom which amazingly came in the summer. A late bloomer!! And it naturally framed itself within the greenery with a gray background from the palm tree bark.
Description: Nature Abstract in Autumn - Natchez Trace by Debra Martz..................................... While hiking the trail at Rock Springs along the Natchez Trail I spotted a tree with one branch hanging low to the water. Loved how the yellow leaves of the tree looked over the reflections in the water. ............................. IMPORTANT: This image is copyright of Debra Martz. All associated rights are reserved. Description: This whitetail deer, aka white-tailed deer, was just one of several that would pass through our campsite at South Llano River State Park in Texas. This state park is almost more like a wildlife refuge. We, also, had Axis deer, wild turkey, armadillos, and a large variety of small birds such as inca dove, blue buntings, painted buntings, grosbeaks and the list goes on and on. A great place to camp if you enjoy wildlife viewing! Description: Simplicity in Nature by Debra Martz It was early autumn and most all plants were turning yellows and reds heading for dormant season but this small wild plant was just beginning! I spotted it while walking around Trout Lake located about 10 or so miles up the mountains on a forest road in New Mexico.
Description: Cactus in the Tree - Flood 2010 - Bentsen Rio State Park by Debra Martz I shot this image back in January 2017 while hiking the trails at Bentson-Rio State Park in southern Texas, thinking it was kind of odd seeing cactus high up in the tree. On a return trip to the park in March 2017, I took a tram ride and the driver stopped and pointed out that very cactus. She explained how the landscape was completely changed by the flood of 2010 and the cactus not only showed how high the waters were but that was the only cactus left in the park in the aftermath. So once back home, I started searching through my images. That tree with the cactus now had a story to tell. July, 2010, hurricane Alex slammed northern Mexico and unleashed heavy ...
Description: Buff-bellied Hummingbird Feeding at Turks Cap by Debra Martz I watched this humming bird fly quickly in and out of the trees at Estero LLano Grande State Park in Weslaco, TX. Finally, it landed and enjoyed some nectar of the Turk's Cap flower. This was my second time seeing the Buff-bellied hummingbird; the other time was also in Weslaco but at the Frontera Audubon feeding station.
Description: Curve-billed Thrasher Profile by Debra Martz I had been looking so hard to find the very tiny birds that I almost missed this thrasher sitting just overhead on an open tree limb. The sun was shining through the trees just right to show off its beautiful glowing orange eye and chest feathers and patterns. And from the look of its bill; it must have been afternoon snack time!!
Description: Male Northern Cardinal High in the Treetop by Debra Martz I looked out my back window and this handsome guy was sitting in the top of my maple tree. I doubted there was time to grab my camera, dart out the front door, around to the side gate and then slowly approach the backyard. Glad I gave it a try because, as you can see, he waited for his photograph to be taken! Backyard bird watching can be quite good at times! "May you come to find comfort in and remember: Cardinals appear when angels are near. So go now, sit outside and drink your tea. It is there, your loved one will be." ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends 3" 20211211-DSC_0003
Description: High Roller Ferris Wheel Abstract - Las Vegas by Debra Martz I did a bit of a twist to my original image of the High Roller for an abstracted look. This Ferris Wheel, located in Las Vegas, NV, is the largest observation wheel in the world at this time. It is 550 high when you reach the top. Each cabin (capsule) will hold up to 40 passengers. The views are fantastic.
Description: Mangrove with Shadow and Reflection by Debra Martz Often there is a shadow or a reflection but this one gave me both!! Textures and enhanced colors added in post processing. Each year I find mangrove seeds watching ashore on the beaches along Padre Island, Texas. But on this particular day I noticed quite a few while walking 1.25 mile boardwalk/path at a nature preserve called Charlie's Pasture in Port Aransas, Texas. I'm not sure if it or any of the other ones will survive in these shallow waters that often become dry flats as the area depends somewhat on tides and a great deal on rain. I liked how the water ripples were catching the light as it moved over the seed.
Description: Spring is in the Air - Northern Beardless Tyrannulets by Debra Martz What a treat to see this pair while on a bird walk at Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, Texas. I was not the only birder that was thrilled, excited, wowed by this pair as they fly in and out of this Ball Moss. They are so tiny, measuring in at only 4-1/2" and a rare sighting in Texas. We heard their call and really thought that would be all we would get of them...just their beautiful sound! Spring is in the Air
Description: I first discovered the Rabb Plantation located south of Brownsville, Texas on a bird watching trip in February of 2016. The beautiful plantation home, restored in 2013, serves as the Visitors Center for the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. On my most recent trip there, again for birds, I discovered this beautiful fresco when (pardon me) I had to use the restroom:) A plaque on the wall gave this description of the fresco, "This room, now re-purposed as a washroom, originally opened to the kitchen and served as a pantry. During the restoration process, the fresco you see here was discovered behind wooden paneling. While not believed to be original to the house's construction in 1892, its design and style are consistent with that of the 1920s-...
Description: Seashell on the Beach by Debra Martz It was a beautiful day for a walk on the beach. This shell had just freshly washed ashore. A close look with the zoom and you can see the bubbles of water on it. A beach walk is never the same even if you are covering the same area over and over. Some days there are many shells and some days only a few. This day walk was at the Mustang Island State Park located between Port Aransas and North Padre Island, Texas, along the Gulf of Mexico.
Description: Edison Bulb Lighting by Debra Martz. Checked in at the Marriott in Pittsburgh and decided to have a cocktail since rain interfered with going out for some sight seeing before my flight the next morning. I sat there admiring the simplicity of the Edison bulbs hanging from heavy black coated wiring. Then it "clicked"...my camera was handy so why not compose a picture of the lights. Back in the room I decided on an edit in black and white, contrast and textures for a grunge effect. A bit of an abstract mood.
Description: Colorful Strands of Beads by Debra Martz I was outside walking around in my yard with my camera as I often do. Usually in search of a flower, insect or bird to photograph. As I walked back to the front door I noticed the light on the beads of my chime, zoomed in and shot upward toward an overcast sky. After viewing on my computer, I decided on a square format but was a little underwhelmed with the plan background. So I then decided to use one of my panning shots I take in nature and use it for an overlay.
Description: Dominican Republic Amber Coast Beach Strolling ©Debra Martz Enjoying a walk on the soft sand of this uncrowded beach. Puerto Plata is located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic and is known as the Amber Coast due to the area’s large deposits of amber. This region is also famous for its white sand beaches. I've added some soft overlays of textures for enhancement. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
Description: Lower Falls of Grand Canyon of Yellowstone by Debra Martz........................... Yellowstone's Lower Waterfall is in the area of the park named Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. There are the upper falls and lower falls both on the Yellowstone River. There are several viewpoints/stops/hikes to take in the beauty of these falls. This particular point is called Artist Point.
