Description: “The Pioneer” (Hebrew) 1935. Graphic illustration for a poster or magazine cover promoting settlement in the Land of Israel. Designed by Steven Pesach Ir-Sahi. Public domain, via PPPA. Steven Pesach Ir-Sahi (1896-1968) was a Hungarian-born Israeli graphic designer, painter, and typographer who played a pivotal role in shaping visual culture in early Israeli society. After making Aliyah from Budapest, he became one of the leading figures in Israel’s poster design. The poster is in the Bauhaus style and links the pioneer with the country’s development. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.
